Is there anyone in here who has never flown Economy class?

I'm happy to put some extensions to the question -

  • Haven't flown Economy on a route where a higher class is available.
  • Haven't flown Economy in the past 15 years. (Things were different back then sonny!)
  • Haven't flown Economy long haul (But have done it in J/F). (I'm sure lots of people fit in here)

The winner is someone who does shorthaul regularly but has never stepped past the curtain. You can share with us how you justify paying for J on a 1 hour flight.

For those who answer - do you know how much the rest of us are suffering? :)

Bossreggie comes to mind

I'd agree, but remember a time I picked him up from OOL, around the VA status match and his flight turned out to be completely Y or Y+, he was at the front, but it wasn't the same.

As to justifying things, when you have the money, why wouldn't you spend it?

I fit this category, although I've only ever done 2 (longer) international flights... JQ "Business" Class to KIX, and NZ to SFO. Hoping to keep my international long haul in this category in the future too.

I haven't flown domestic Y for 20+ years - except on JQ or DJ (and only a handful of flights on those). Last international Y flight was 21 years ago - NorthWest SYD-JFK via Japan!

I've flown economy domestic and short haul international plenty of times.

I've also booked economy long haul, but have never flown it.

(my longest Y flight to date is the 5 hours LAX-JFK).

Only three times, but more in March to May.

I'm guessing most people HAVE flown economy at some point in their lives for whatever reason (no business route available, or when they were younger etc).

Who do you mean, JuLiar Gillard?

No, considering most Australians prefer being de facto poms... Sorry sorry, I mean subjects of the crown, I thought most people would assume the Queen of German lineage that is the figurehead of the UK. :p

Generally when I go overseas the last few trips anyway have been with a group so we have all booked tickets together so but hard to book anything else.

On the other hand i have flown in single class cabins so bit hard to upgrade anyway.

It started aged 12 (solo flyer) first flight and first seat was 1A from Maroochydore - SYD - ok it was economy but it set a standard for the last decade of nearly always row 1.

Next came Ansett and life Golden Wing membership (i think around $2 1/4K) in the beginning able to choose bulk head or over wing exit for self and parents when they came along (family in SYD). They started comp up to J mid 1990's and included my EX on a couple of our flight together until a year before their demise - no comp up or bulk head seating - so started using points after a bad Claustrophobic attack and next couple of flights started to see signs of it not stopping. (OT my Golden Wing Membership was a good investment with all comp up - only downfall all points lost at least 3 RTW)

Joined QFF and life QC thinking they would do same (comp up - never had one) so started paid J from 2001 on all DOM and 2006 INT.

1st and foremost reason I'm Claustrophobic, next self-employed and lastly one day I'll dead and there'll be no use for money where ever I end up. :D

The most in this regard is that I haven't been in Y on some specific types - while I've been on the CX A343 a few times, I've never went further back than row 14. I could've said the same thing about the CX 744 and BA 744 until very recently as well, so it looks like I'm downgrading myself a little these days.

3 x sub 2hr flights in Y in 17 years of regular flying
no way i'd get on a long haul flight in Y
justify it by being tall and claustrophobic
lucky to have always had points to burn and flexible schedule - occasionally i might have to stump up for a steep fare

You need to fly long haul at least once in Y to have anywhere near the motivation to pay what would otherwise seem utterly unreasonable J prices. However once is enough for it then to become an obsession. Its basically like paying to avoid a prison sentence... you would if you could.
