Inside Scoot Cabins Or "Hey Goober, Where's the Legroom?"

I just did a dummy booking on Scoot with Seat+Bag+Eat, pillow/blanket, bulkhead seat, inflight entertainment return and no points/lounge access then tried the same dates on QF.
Scoot is only $90 each way less with all the extras than Qantas, why would you put up with getting squashed on a plane with budget service for a saving of $90 each way..

I'll still be flying Qantas/SQ thank you very much!

This is why when I fly by myself I will usually fly QF. The $90 saving between a LCC and a full service carrier is rarely worth it, however when taking the family we're now looking at a $540 saving, which is worthy of consideration (that is the cost of a couple of nights accom, or visiting a few attractions, or being able to afford the trip vs not been able to afford the trip)

Scoot Cancellations.

So called the centre and gave my PNR.
First response - no cancellations permitted, no refunds.
Pushed on taxes - oh they may be refunded but you have to write in.
Pushed on legalities of this and got no response.
Ultimately got a mail address into which i have to write and I may get taxes refunded, in 6-8 weeks.

T&Cs are interesting and self contradictory.
11.1 No refunds except where required by law (inc taxes)
4.2 May refund taxes, admin fee applies (disclosed on other pages as S$30)

$90...umm that sounds a little low for the average saving (hopefully they aren't following JQi's pricing model!), if do a comparison of say Feb 2013 I see the following:

QF SIN-SYD-SIN Super Saver Discount Y - $1013 SGD
TZ SIN-SYD-SIN FlyBagEat (Plus Tablet IFE) - $650SGD

Neither of these are sale fares either from what I can see. Comparing Scootbiz to QFPE also might be interesting (I know not a direct comparison but tempting to make such a big saving for some compromise...).

I was using cmon0005's example of $90...

Still that is in SGD, (it works out to be $140AUD each way difference for your example) if you add the blanket/pillow on and choose your seat near the front it would bring the difference down to $90AUD or less.

If you can mix and match fares, you could probably shave off a few more dollars on the TZ option by opting out of a meal on the SIN-SYD sector. If it leaves late enough, the SIN-SYD sector is pretty moot to have a meal on, since for that 7.5 hour flight you really need sleep and all of it you can get!

The savings could probably buy you enough food in SIN beforehand to get completely stuffed (even in the airport) and then some more. (Buy a whole bottle of scotch and drink that if it makes you better!)

Seriously, I know why it was included (for comparison fairness), so yeah... but just an idea all the same :)

I think the blanket is nickel and diming, i hardly ever see people using them, also seat selection costs extra $20AUD on QF so it's really non-issue. Regardless of currency it sits at a 40% discount over QF standard fares - factor in regular sales (which is highly likely given they are trying to sell 400 Y seats a sector) and it only goes up from there.

Yup you can mix and match the fares, agree with the suggestion - hit the food court at SIN and get some delicious take away.

I was doing my comparison on a like for like basis, if QF offered something included as part of the ticket(food, pillow, entertainment.etc) then I selected it on the scoot booking.
My point was if you're a frequent flyer and use/value all of those things then its probably not worth flying scoot for a small saving.

And regarding the $20 qantas seat charge thats only for non-status pax and on scoot its up to $79 each way for a bulkhead seat.

Sure I drew the line at 'consumables' though I mean it gets a bit much counting the eyeshades, blanket, pillow - besides they might be enhanced on QF shortly anyway!

Doing like for like best to leave out status benefits, not guaranteed that you can get good seats anyway...

As an example, almost every time I've flown QFi I see almost everyone in the cabin with a blanket over them, and a pillow behind their head, so it would be assumed a lot of people would go for pillow/blanket option, even though small charge once you add all the other little charges it becomes quite big.

Well I survived my scoot experience to SIN (On the maiden flight from OOL-SIN) ... Interesting airline. Trip Report coming soon ... Not sure when though.

Look forward to the TZ TR Mal.. I was scheduled for the maiden flight, though.. thought you could be the 'Guinea Pig".. & report back when time allows.. I have another date soon with Scoot up my sleeve..
Cheers,

There are a few trip reports already. The consensus appears to be as long as it is cheap then it should not be an issue. I do not think it is worth the risk booking out 6-12 months in advance....

About two weeks after my letter requesting a tax refund, got the following email from "The Scoot Team" -- TalkToUs @ flyscoot.com

A followup on my last post

After sending a reminder email at 12 weeks (to the TalkToUs email mentioned above without an acknowledgement), today I finally got my refund (about 16 weeks total since the letter requesting the refund) - they were about to get another letter
Was for a bit under $100 so not too bad.
