Pretty sure they won't have to, but just double checking quickly:

Parents flying PER-xKUL-HKG on one ticket (MH) then to YVR on CX on a different ticket.

They will have checked baggage, and the question is, do they need to clear immigration and get their bags to check in landside or is the transfer (generally) seamless like in SIN?

    Thanks!

If their bags are not through checked they will need to collect and recheck, security at HKG is very strict on needing boarding pass for the next flight to go through transfer formalities.

Assuming that the stopover in Hong Kong is relative short (less than 24 hours), as long as they are checked through from Per to YVR in Perth there is no need to clear immigration and custom. Bags will check all the way through to YVR.

Its a very long journey and good luck to them.

thanks Markis. So if they get the bags through checked can they get a BP airside and not have to clear immigration? I haven't been to HKG in some time.

Yes, although I suspect they wont have much luck, MH here are done by Menzies iirc who hardly have a stellar attitude when it comes to customer service.

Worst case scenario is that they will need to go to CX counter airside in HKG to get their boarding pass.

There is a transfer desk located in HKG arrivals area where CX boarding pass can be collected prior to air-side transfer to departures area (if not supplied in PER). If its one ticket and HKG is a same-day transit, then there is no reason the bags will not be checked though to final destination.

Its different tickets with Menzies doing the check in, I would be surprised if any service is provided, especially if its ex Perth.

Sorry, missed the "different tickets" part in the OP. Still work asking since they are both OneWorld airlines. But certainly don't hold any expectations. This is when HLO has its benefits.

Separate tickets! As markis10 infers, at MH check-in the luggage may on may not be checked though to canada, even though *O to *O should have some clout.

    Thanks for all the replies.

Have asked the folks to ask at check-in and try to get the bags checked all the way through. Otheriwse they will have to get their bags. HLO is unlikely for this one-0 5 weeks away in Canada and north America including an Alaskan cruise.

Been through hkg twice in last week and immigration has only taken 2 minutes each time. So if they have to im sure they will be fine. Markis10 is spot on, you need bp to get into departures area

Update- folks were really happy with MH checkin staff at PER. Paid upgrade to J to KUL - $600. Through checked the luggage to YVR. Got a BP in HKG so could transit through.

Spent a while in the Wing and are now on CX over the oceans.

    Thanks for the tips!
