Hilton (brand) returning to MEL

When DT is cheap I don’t mind it. Traveling solo for business I don’t need a fancy room and the location is ideal 4 min walk to my office. Problem is due to lack of HH properties in the city too many loyalists blindly booking DT to maintain status and rates are more often than not overpriced. There are far better options near by for > $200, hopefully a new Hilton will be one of them soon.

Agreed. Sometimes the PanPacific is cheaper than the DT.

Both Pan Pacific and the new Novotel are consistently cheaper than DT.

Speaking of the new Hilton, I hope they price it within the ATO's per diem rates; I cannot (will not) stay at hotels that charge over that threshold (to give an idea, both Pan Pacific and the new Novotel are very often priced below that threshold).

I live opposite the said Melbourne Square. The first two buildings are under construction on this huge site and the hotel will be in building 5 though of course it may be the third built. My guess is that 2022 is very optimistic.
 
Good to see the rumours firming up. It doesn't seem well placed for business travellers though.

It's no worse placed than Hilton South Wharf and better placed than Hilton on the Park for business. It's a simple two stop tram ride or a 5-10 minute walk into town. I grant it is not in the golden mile however.

New Hilton Hotel for Melbourne Square Southbank expected to open 2022

However there is another property that should be ready much sooner. Apparently the owner haven’t decided on the brand yet so it’s unclear if going to be Curio or Hilton.

The site currently under construction is one very large development that will include residential apartments, plus a shopping centre with a full scale Woolworths Supermarket.

The issue I can see is an over supply of hotel rooms in southbank pretty much as this hotel opens in a few years time.

A Fourth Crown casino branded hotel is approved for Queensbridge Road, a IHG hotel is already under construction in City Road and Accor have a pre- commitment for a “peppers” ( which may end up being another brand) in Clarendon Street.

I’m also aware of plans to have a boutique hotel besides the “tea house”/ Jeff’s Shed that is awaiting a planning decision.

It’s going to be great for leisure travellers in the quieter months in Melbourne (between End March - End September ) for some cheap room rates, athough with all the additional supply of hotel rooms this may prove to be an absolute bloodbath for yield in the quieter months.

Depends how many Hiltons will end up being build in Melbourne. If this property will be the only Hilton it will do ok most of the year thanks to the captive audience of HHonors. DT MEL currently makes a killing offering very little for very high price. HSYD is another example, an average and expensive hotel operating in highly competitive market yet doing very well. Hopefully the new HMEL will be at least as good as the former HSW and with a slightly better location it should do well.
 
Not having a property in the city I still think is going to mean missed revenue. Our offices are on the upper part of Collins St so wouldn't really bother with any on the other side of the river as its just too inconvenient and I know a lot of colleagues would say the same. However I do welcome having a Hilton option to see if I could go Marriott Plat/Hilton Diamond rather than targeting Marriott Plat with Ambassador.
