Re: The totally off-topic thread

I remember when I was a kid being told off by a teacher for starting a sentence with "And". Apparently it's acceptable now. Also when you first send a letter to someone, you should end it "yours faithfully" and not "yours sincerely". Something about formalities.

That rule was promulgated by some latin scholar ( I believe ). as English is more Germanic the use of "And , so But and because"is actually fine. ( or So Prof Rolly Sussex says)

Cant believe this thread is still goings strong with no shows of abating. Just shoes that pedantry is not dead I guess.

I think you're having a lend of us GPH, so many grammar errors in your post  :D

commmas ?

Oops:!::!::!: :oops: :oops:

hmmm. Can you give an example?

I'm actually struggling to think of examples of this, too......

The sports commentator (or "reporter") / player interaction thing doesn't really fit as an example in this case.

Some statements can change in intention subtly by use or otherwise of a question mark, for example:

The two nations had started to finally recognise that continuing the war was placing undue pressure on their treasuries and people. For now, a truce.

versus

The two nations had started to finally recognise that continuing the war was placing undue pressure on their treasuries and people. For now, a truce?

and then there is "Aswell"

Who the hell writes "aswell"? That just sounds ridiculous.

You are challenging me to give you an example? :D

Here's a recent one, there are better examples:

And the 70 MEL-SYD-MEL in Y- pax should be flying JQ?

That's more bad sentence structure (or lack thereof) than a misuse of a question mark.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

The abomination 'alright' has cemented itself in the current language despite the best efforts of my old-school Year 6 teacher. She used to say "It's two words: all and right. Not one word."

I bet there was a similar teacher back in about 1870 trying to prevent the rise of 'already'.

I accept that some things change and that's okay - we don't want to back to "to-day" and "to-morrow" do we?

I disagree. The first example is "You are challenging me to give you an example?" Without the ? it is a statement. To make it a question you should write "Are you challenging me to give an example?", not just stick a ? on the end of the first statement.

Similarly, the second statement should not end with a question mark. If it is supposed to be a question it should read "And should the 70 MEL-SYD-MEL in Y- pax be flying JQ?", not "And the 70 MEL-SYD-MEL in Y- pax should be flying JQ?"

Rearranging the sentence as you did, points to poor sentence structure as suggested?

In the firtst example, where it is in the written form I would agree with you. However, asking the questions verbally, it could easily be a question with the correct intonation and use of facial muscles :D.

Bad sentence structure is acceptable if new migrants on 457 visas are able to get away with it and are also paid quite well.

"What program it is?"

Are we making any allowances for AFFers whose first language is not English?

That's a tricky one. It's an English grammar and spelling thread. So maybe not? I wouldn't expect a thread about French grammar and spelling to make allowances for people whose first language is English. Or Chinese etc. And most of this paragraph is grammatically incorrect. :p
