Readers of my trip reports will know that I don't particually care if I have to use the nude-o-matic body scanners at airports. I work on the theory that if someone wants to get their rocks off looking at my dangly bits - good on them.... meh

So with talk of the introduction of the FBS at AU international airports next year, who is for and who is against? As a caveat, I do believe that kids and younger teens should be exempt from the FBS and usual precautions as in place today are taken with them.As a non polled question, should the FBS be introduced at domestic airports in AU? I think yes, but after a discussion with a few frequent travellers yesterday at work, the general consensus was no.

My recollection (of the way it works OS) is that:

1) The viewer of the 'picture' is in a separate location and cannot actually see the real person (unless of course there is an issue, what happens then I'm not sure)

2) The images are not kept (though there seems to have been a case or two OS where it was discovered that they were kept)

Provided the above two conditions are met, and provided it is no more 'dangerous' than current WTMDs I have no issue. I probably wouldn't even be bothered if condition 1) was not met. I have no issues with the 'nude' side of things.

I do think everyone should be subject to it though - kids included. And if it is a better technology, with no extra health risks then yes, introduce it.

Only problem is that everything needs to be emptied from one's pockets - slows me down getting to the lounge.:-|:p

If it speeds up security and makes the travel safer over all I couldn't give a cough about going through them. I say send everyone through. Kids, teens, dogs. It would also presumably prevent the smuggling of drugs on the body?????! Yes??

No technical issues for me. But I have a problem with the reasons for using them. Are they more effective than WTMD, that hasn't been proven, IMO. We are also told this is for security, but then the presentation of drug smuggling is raise as a reason. What is it security or drugs? If it is for drugs than say so, don't mislead people.

I don't have a problem in being scanned, but my question is whether they actually improve security.

I raised the drugs issue purely as speculation, I have no proof that it can detect drugs, not have i read anywhere that it can. I presume that being an x-ray it would pick up variances in matter and present a case for further investigation. Would need to do more research to prove it though.

Just on the nude-o-matic. I've heard that Australia, which is trialing these things, has got the stick figure update.

Can it see into body cavities?

No.

It's good speculation. It'll certainly pick up anything straped to your body. Watching banged up aboard and body straping seems to be fairly common.

Look.... if some security official wants to check out my junk on the nude-o-matic, he/she is more than welcome

It's efficient and effective and if it makes my flying experience safer - i'm all for it.

When I go through the nude-o-scope's in the US, I always seem to get the pat-down afterwards. I'm always asked if I've left something on my person/in my clothing - I don't.

Now I just opt out - why go through the machine if I'm going to get the pat down anyway? I'll just skip a step...

In the words of Ryan Bingham "Randomly selected for additional screening" lol

Sent from my Telstra iPhone using the Australian Frequent Flyer application.

The "random selection" was operating beautifully in UK airports during my recent visit. 70 and 80 year old women being subjected to the full groping pat down. This airport pantomime seems such a farce. Surely the intel on known security threats could help shape a less intrusive and more targeted approach to security.

Tell that to the families of the recently killed troops by the 12 year old suicide bomber...

Such a valid point. The filth who organise these things have no qualms about using children etc. to carry out their objectives, and if children (and others...maybe including the elderly) are known to be exempt from high-level security, then it's game on.

I note that the TSA is now required by law to to allow you to nominate the sex of the person viewing your scan.

Of course, I will always ask for a female to review my scan.
