Unnecessary, don't work properly and too expensive.

I't a national shame

There should be at least an opt out option. I always opt out through the US and get the grope. The US Rapidscan machines are definitely suspect for health and are proven useless in countless reports and one recent congressional inquiry into the enormous waste of funds deploying these things. They are now ordering dosimeters for the TSA operators (finally) due to radiation concerns

Sorry but that is a different type of radiation hence the USA experience is irrelevant.

I am more likely to die of alcohol poisoning or get hit by a combine harvester in the Perth CBD than by radiation from a body scanner.

Scan away. So long as it speeds up my travel I am not fussed. I wonder if it is like the one on the Arnie film TOTAL RECALL, that would be cool.

I'm not particularly concerned if people check out my ageing body in the raw. Nothing personal anybody, but looking at a parade of frequent flyers is not likely to be an arousal-fest.

However, younger people are more likely to be gazed at with erotic intent. Likewise celebrities, possibly for other reasons.

I'm not entirely convinced that the generic body shape will be the only option available to the operator. My guess is that it would be a bit of a safeguard to prevent your security shift resembling that of the shower attendant at the old folks home.

But when the high school volleyball squad comes through, will there be a switch to flick over to the high-definition mode to view the raw data?

My main objection to these things is that after years of refining my clothing and carryon kit so that I can just walk straight through the metal detector scanners, I'll now have to stop and turn and wave my arms around.

What's next? We jump up and down to maybe shake stuff loose?

As others have pointed out, a bomber can walk straight into the middle of the checkin queue and blow himself up, or leave a bag unattended for the few seconds needed to get out of range of the blast. Pick your spot well and hundreds die. Every airport in Australia, if not the world, would be shut down until someone works out a solution.

Crowded commuter trains, sporting events, bus terminals, shopping centres, carols by candlelight... We can't make everything 100% secure without totally destroying our freedoms.

[h=1]TSA to Halt Revealing Body Scans at Airports[/h]The Transportation Security Administration is pulling from airports its last 174 full-body scanners that show naked images of flyers to TSA agents in a closed room, following public complaints and a congressional mandate. The TSA said Thursday that it will replace most of the scanners—known as backscatters—with ones that filter images to depict only potentially hazardous items on a generic human silhouette, rather than an image of the traveler's body.

Surely it's just a software upgrade.

And the new software will be fully 'skin-able' with operator selectable templates. Like GTA, there will also be hidden 'naked' cookies and surprise pop ups. As for potentially hazardous, if you have metal teeth, hip implants, or a pacemaker, surrender to be 'zapped' with an extra special dose of badness.

But yes, it SHOULD be software only, unless someone wants to hump the taxpayer. Mind you, no-one has apologized for the previous false and misleading statements AFTER pictures were leaked. Why should anything change this time?
