Feedback on the Xenforo 2.1 Upgrade

From what I can see, it seems to miss posts when you start a thread, but picks up replies. Is that your experience too? Unsure why it behaves this way, may be a bug in the core software that needs to be patched.
All of my reports have the “too many redirects” issue. All borked. When I have time in, well, maybe by end of year I’ll sort them out if needed.

This is a separate issue. You need to find your old TR's (Google or site search perhaps, maybe even TR list) and then change the links. The links you have in your signature are over 18 months old and are from the vBulletin days.

OK, I've found an easier way to trawl through all the alerts. Most of them are reactions..... rather than clicking on each alert to see which post it relates to, there's a nice little feature called Reactions that is accessible here: https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/account/reactions

That shows who made the reaction and even shows a snippet of the post right there so saves you having to click onto the alert. Nice. Much easier!

Having used it for a day or so now I can say it really is a massive improvement, even on the old alerts system which did work quite well. Has it always been hiding in plain site or is it a new feature that came with this upgrade?

Not being able to look back on the old system I can honestly say I do not know. However, the old system used an add-on called Post Ratings and the new system uses a core function called Reactions, so my guy would be that it is new functionality. I imagine the old system may have been able to provide information on likes alone, but not the rest.

Is Tapatalk works with AFF? It is supporting Xenforo
No – and it's not needed anyway due to the responsive design nature of Xenforo. Besides, the version of Xenforo we are running isn't even compatible with Tapatalk.

When Tapatalk first entered the market and we used vBulletin we did make use of them, but their business structure and privacy policies changed very quickly and we have not used them for a long time. When we moved to Xenforo we ended our reliance on an app.

Yes, so clicking a thread title will either take you to the first post (if unread) or the first unread post if you have previously visited the thread.
I have had a look through the posts, and can only find this oblique reference to my issue. When I click on a thread where I have read all the posts, it takes me back to the first post, not the last read post. That can be tens, even hundreds of pages earlier. Quite often I want to go back to reply to something I read, I land on post#1, then skip to the last page, then scroll down to find the last few messages so that I can click reply to a particular message. A bit time consuming really.

I have mentioned this before, but as an aside to something else.

It can be irritating - and inconsistent.

This was raised as a 'suggestion' for Xenforo 2.0, but opinion is divided. It's certainly not a user-changeable (or even administrator) option as far as I am aware.

Sometimes I land back a few posts I’ve already read. When there are no new posts it takes you to the very first post.

Clifford et al, when the figure for 'number who have viewed' appears at the bottom of this post (and shows the avatars of these AFFers), is the figure referring only to those who have read the latest post, those who've read anything on that thread's current page, or those who have ever - at any time - read something on this particular thread?

It refers to...
those who have ever - at any time - read something on this particular thread?
... and does so in the order they did it in (with the order changing each time they look at it afresh) from newest to oldest.

For example, currently member BillytheFIsh is the last member of all the members who have viewed this thread. This means every other member ahead of them has viewed the thread more recently. However, if they view the thread again then their avatar will move up and Robert will then be the member who appears last (presuming they don't view it too).

Has the link to "Top Posters" in a thread disappeared?
Yes, this was an add-on that is unsupported in this version of Xenforo. The developer stopped maintaining it a while ago.

You can still see Most Messages/Reactions/etc overall here: Notable members

That's a shame. Sometimes handy to know who has posted in a thread and how many times.

And also those lists only contain the top of the list?

A recommendation regarding the "too many redirects" issue: Perhaps try implementing a rewrite rule? Not sure if the forum's backend is self-managed, but from the looks of it, it runs on NGINX, and theoretically you can specify a rule in the relevant webserver .conf file that redirects URLs of a specific pattern.

Here's a possible example that redirects URLs fitting the scheme /community/<category name>/thread-name-<thread ID>.html to /community/threads/<thread ID>:

Code:
location /community {
    rewrite ^/community/[a-z0-9-]*/(.*-)([0-9]*).html$ /community/threads/$2 permanent;
}

Not sure if XenForo would overwrite any changes made directly to the config files, and once again not sure what level of management the forum's hosting company imposes, but it might be worth a shot. It's a mild annoyance following the links from old news posts and having to copy the links and edit them manually XD, and having auto-redirects removes the need for members to manually alter each link.

We have taken another stab at this over the last few days and it's currently way more complex than I am capable of fixing. We may seek outside help, but it's also worth noting most links are correct these days so we do not feel this is too much of an issue. Major threads/stickies have had their links updated to point to the right locations.

We do not know the reason the redirects stopped working on upgrade, but we did have approximately ~400 redirects previously that covered every eventuality and had no issues. As the URL structure remains the same, it's a mystery.

I am not sure if this is a result of the update but I started a thread in the destination guide re Anne Frank house several days ago. If I go to "my account" area & click on "your content" to see if there has been any replies to the post, the post/threaad does not show as existing?

This has been mentioned, we are unsure of the cause of this bug at the moment. May be in the core software and a subsequent update will fix it for us. Still investigating.
