There is an article in the morning Fin Review about some divergence in opinions on where the dollar is headed. WHere do the banks thing the dollar will be at year end?

ANZ: 68c
Westpac: 68c
NAB: 79c
CommBank: 89c

Make of that what you will :)

I wonder if the economists at banks have part of their performance tied to getting their guesses right?

And an economic newsletter I read suggests the aussie will test parity again in 3 months.Throwing a dart will obviously be just as accurate as an economists opinion!:p

Buy! - I'm heading to the USA this weekend and the aussie$ is sure to fall ... :-|

Pls don't fly anywhere near the USA in 10 weeks time when I require USD ;)

Just over 7 months ago, they were predicting the AUD would drop to USD0.40!!!....proving these economists know ABSOLUTELY nothing!

The Australian dollar may fall to a record low next year, possibly dipping below 40 US cents for the first time, as slowing growth in emerging markets cools demand for the raw materials exported by the nation.
The currency has dropped 31% since reaching a 25-year high of 98.49 US cents on July 16, sliding as prices of crude oil, gold and nickel declined. It reached 47.75 cents in April 2001, the lowest since it started trading freely in 1983.
Dollar dive: 40 US cents warning

Though this newsletter did actually predict the rise back in january and has now updated-originally the target was 75c by May.And it is an economic newsletter not an economist's newsletter.

I've only got a week in the US and three weeks in Canada so I'm closely watching the loony dollar as well. The $A is back up to 88c Canuckian. Keep it up!
And in other news...
$A1= 80.8 now.

Did not someone say that economists were put on the earth to make astrologers look good? I stick by what I said here - the aussie dollar tracks the US stock market.

:)

If I was in the USA now instead of February everything would have been 30% cheaper

At least it makes my next holiday cheaper :mrgreen:

John you have obviously now qualified as an expert economist!:p:D
Just trying to help people plan around my holidays. Traditionally when I have gone overseas the AUD has been performing poorly. The AUD got progressively worse last year and it was performing very poorly on my last trip in December/January of this year. I have not been overseas since which may go part of the way to explaining the upward surge of the AUD.

A quiet warning that I am planning to be overseas in August/September and then again in December/January....

Sorry docjames now may well be the right time to hedge your bets as I do not return until 25 September. :-|

Travelex will give you $US788 for $A1000 right now. When that goes to $US800 I might jump in. Need to find a loose floorboard to hide the cash until September...;)

Or $C841.
