My Earth Gold Mastercard will definitely be retired as soon as I change over all the automatic payments. :D

l'm also starting to look at other options.

Earth Gold at present
AMEX $1=1 point
Mastercard $1=0.5 point
Bonus points on QF booking though (I think it's double the purchase price)
And comes with Int travel insurance, but almost all Gold and Plat cards to now days.

I'm considering the Woolworths card, and the AMEX discovery card (for the extra point on Qantas) as a replacement to Earth. (Amex Earth really only gets used for the extra point on QF)

Really? Next time I want some DVD or a TV I'll buy gift cards firsts then buy the goods with those.
If buying the item from Dick Smith, then no benefit i using a Gift Card. But if buying from Big-W, BWS, Dan Murphy, Woolworths etc, then buying the gift card from Dick Smith allows you to use the current Amex promotion.

The promotion is for bonus points when spending >$50 on Amex at Dick Smith stores.

Try Westpac SQ AMEX Visa for size - 1 QFF with EDR swipe and 1.5 KF points - gotta love that - and double KF points on SQ purchases.

Now if the fockers had not focked with the Visa earn rate I would still be as happy as a pig in the proverbial.

Well I logged on today and my credit card is now listed in the profile. So hopefully I'll see it in the mail soon :)

My card arrived today -- that took a month. I activated it over the phone in a few minutes -- no need to go to Woolworths for me anyway. Good to see Bpay accounts can be done from the website.

Credit limit is about what I expected. The card is marked as 'Platinum'.

Oh thats good to know. My login at EDR has said the card was approved for about 3-4 days now - prolly still a while to wait before the plastic actually arrives given your experience.

As for being marked "Platinum" - that seems strange as there doesn't appear to be any of the normal benefits associated with a platinum card. In fact, looks to me like a real bare bones no frills direct QFF sweep card.

If it weren't for the 16K free points I wouldn't have been keen to stump up 89$ for such a basic card.

Although quite pro-family, IMHO.

I often wonder how we ever managed to shop "in the old days".

As I recall, parents would rush home after work on a Thursday (that being the only day available for working parents to do the groceries) leave the kids unattended at home because there was no way one adult could do an entire weeks' worth of grocery shopping for a family alone in the limited time available before the shops closed, nor drag three children along through the massed Thursday night crowds, and bring home junk food for dinner because there was no time left to cook. Family friendly?

One Platinum benefit is the Concierge service.
However most people are attracted by the ability to earn 1QFF point per dollar spent.
For $89 this is a bargain, and the 16,000 points the icing on the cake.

These are the listed benefits of this card so far as I could see:

I'm always a bit suspect of the Concierge services of these types of cards. Maybe I've just never found myself yet in a situation whereby they could really add value. Anyone tried ringing the service listed for this EDR/QFF CC?

Would I be correct in saying that this card, like every other mastercard planinum card, is grouped to the same MasterCard Global Service™

If so any mastercard should provide exactly the same service...?

???

I got my card today. From memory I applied just over a week ago.

I'm not required to show proof of income, or ID and the card is now active. I'm not and never have been a HSBC customer. Weird.

Re tax deductibility of card fees: According to the ATO in most circumstances they are --

ATO on card fees

That's not actually what that ruling says - the ruling says you can tax deduct your card fees to the extent that they relate to paying a tax liability, in most circumstances, or if it's used in the course of carrying on your own business, to the extent that it's used to carry on your business. The tax liability circumstance also comes with a giant "and you did not borrow money from your card provider to make the payment" caveat.

In other words, IF you pay a tax debt (not including fines or penalties) using your card, and you did not borrow money to do so, you can tax deduct the proportion of the card fee that relates to paying your tax debt.

For example, if you had a card fee of $100 a year, paid a tax debt of $5000, and spent $15,000 on the card on personal expenses during the year, you would be entitled to tax deduct $25 - but only if you didn't go into debit to pay the tax debt, i.e. your account balance would need to be in credit or it would need to be a debit card.

If you're using your card solely for your own business (and you have to be carrying on a business, not an employee paying business expenses) then you should be able to tax deduct the whole thing.

Otherwise, your card fee is NOT tax deductible.

Note: this is not legal or financial advice, YMMV.

Rebekka,

You have the wrong "Fee".

This is not a credit card's "annual fee", it is the 0.65%/1.25% "Card payment fee" assessed per transaction when making a payment to the ATO using a credit card.

See here:

ATO - How to pay - Credit card: Terms and conditions when making a credit card payment to the ATO

D'oh. I should not attempt to engage with complex issues when I have been awake since before 4am.

Still, in theory I don't see why it shouldn't hold for annual fees as well.

Really? How you managed to get past the application page where you have to state your income/debts, or, was this just for activating the card?

Obviously I told them what my income was on the website, but I wasn't required to go into Woolies or mail anything in.

Applied online -> Card in mail -> Activate over the phone. Done.

Yes, same here. I could have put anything on the electronic form .. no-one appears to have checked anything.

Got the card yesterday afternoon with an insane upper credit limit (for a groceries/fuel card) , I'm hoping it doesn't affect my simultaneous application for an Amex Plat CC. I'll ring them today to activate, perhaps I can drop the limit a bit...

As mentioned already in a post above, in tiny tiny writing, hidden amongst all the branding and general colour of the card is written "platinum" ... yeah right, I don't really think so guys. Having a concierge service alone does not make for a platinum card.

I work for a large company (10k+ employees) and have been here for 7 years, so i'm wondering if they have an agreement or process that makes it easier to validate employees of large companies.
