QUOTE from EDR message sent today:

WHAT IS CHANGING?
From Wednesday, 12 September 2012, Dick Smith will no longer be part of the Everyday Rewards program. Members will not be able to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points on purchases made at Dick Smith stores or at Dick Smith Online with their Everyday Rewards card from this date onwards.
WHY IS EVERYDAY REWARDS MAKING THIS CHANGE?
We continually review the earning partners of the Everyday Rewards program. As part of this review process, the Everyday Rewards and Dick Smith teams reached the conclusion that only a small number of Dick Smith customers were actively participating in the Everyday Rewards program. We, therefore, made the decision in conjunction with the team at Dick Smith to remove Dick Smith from the Everyday Rewards program.

UNQUOTE

A few observations:

- The purchase hurdle for acquiring EDR points in conjunction with DSE purchases is $50, higher than the $30 that applies at other Woolworths outlets. A significant proportion of DSE sales probably doesn't trigger the issue of EDR points, reducing the EDR customer pool at DSE.

- Staff at DSE have not been trained to request EDR cards from customers at point of purchase - many people don't realise that DSE is part of the EDR scheme.

- DSE doesn't in general compete directly with stores that operate competing Rewards schemes (eg Harvey Norman has no Rewards scheme) while FlyBuys (part of Wesfarmers/Coles) does not have a dedicated consumer electronics chain in its camp. Target (FlyBuys rewards) and Myer (Myer rewards) do compete head-on with some products that are sold by DSE, especially with higher end products like TVs and computers, but customers are able to directly negotiate price with the relevant stores and final purchase decisions are probably related to the negotiated price rather than whether rewards points are offered. That said, if customers negotiate a similar price of, say, $2,000 for identical products at DSE and Myer, customers are likely to prefer dealing at Myer.

- DSE seems to be systematically removing key points of differentiation that it once offered the market. Example: Its famous customer satisfaction policy of allowing the return of any product (within 14 days?? of purchase) for a full cash refund, no questions asked, was abandoned about a year ago. DSE employees, once had good knowledge about the products DSE sells. Not these days - staff training has been reduced to minimal and the calibre of DSE employees nowadays is similar to DSE staff counterparts over at WOW supermarkets.

- Woolworths management has noted in multiple earnings announcements over recent years that DSE is not achieving the earnings performance of other divisions within the WOW portfolio of retail assets.

- Woolworths management announced some months ago that it is looking to offload its DSE subsidiary. Removal of the EDR scheme is probably part of the process for preparing the demerger and sale process.

Well no real loss there.Excellent summation SIA1A.
I'm disappointed. I have bought stuff at DSE and enjoyed using the EDR card. Many criticisms in original post are indeed correct but I hardly think the path to their commercial salvation lies in reducing one of the only things that gets me in the store rather than JB. Hope DSE knows what it's doing ....

Cool. JB for all future purchases then. EDR was about the only thing that got me to walk in the door of DSE and put up with their mediocre service.

I recevied the email as well.

it's a shame, I recently made a $440 purchase with DSE a price beat for a DVR/DVD Burner - earned 1040 QFF points

I was considering a computer purchase soon... So now I'll just have to hope Big W steps up or I'll earn nothing. No point going to DSE if I'm not getting anything back.



Dick Smith is being sold by Woolworths. This is just the precursor to a new owner being announced who would not be part of the EDR programme.

..or you could wait till David Jones rolls out their QFF program....They sell various computers from the fruit company....

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Disappointed at this, only shopped at DSE for points on purchases, as often they were more expensive than JB Hifi. When there was only a small price difference or where they price matched for me only then did I buy from them.

Sure if you want to pay the $35 establishment fee and a $2.95 monthly account keeping fee.

I might have to do a price match at DSE for a 13 inch MBA on Monday. (The Good Guys are advertising Macbooks for $120 off).
I'm flying to LAX in September so will also get my GST refunded.
So, a total saving of around $230 :D

That's for the interest free offer though.

As yet, they haven't announced what the QFF offer will be, just that one will be released.

Dick smith price match
Dick smith don't surcharge for Amex
Dick smith accept Woolies gift cards
Dick smith gives QFF points

It is a shame but was expected given DSE is going downhill FAST

Sad to see them go. However had it was hard to earn points unless you bought a $$$ item as you rarely got bonus point offers from them and the $50 minimum spend made it ridiculously hard to even crack one point.

DSE IMO got caught out trying to compete against bigger competitors who specialise in more expensive goods when their speciality was the lower end of the market they use to specialise in when Dick Smith was in charge. Today Jaycar reminds me of what DSE used to be good at.

Certainly - the salesman at DSE tried to upsell with an 'extended warranty' and then a HDMI cable for the DVR 'discounted' to $40.

My CC covered the warranty extension and I rocked across to Jaycar for the HDMI cable at $10 ...

Bit of a shame - I recently brought a retina mbp from the online store during the 10% off sale - basically lured in by the points.

Agree - all things being equal they did get some of my business from my WW EDR and Amex cards, probably not anymore so its off to JB Hi Fi or online for my next big purchases.

Re: EDR Targetted Bonus Point Promotions

An important change to earning
points with Everyday Rewards

Sorry, have I missed something -- how did you get an extra 1000 points? Was it a bonus offer or some such?
