Doubletree Melbourne

Stayed at H DT last night. Rate was $184 for a basic King. Full breakfast was $30.
:( Could've hosted you to free breakfast if I knew you were there but you didn't miss much anyway. I took a downgrade this time as they were going to put me on lower floor front room, was promised the balcony room for next stay but we'll see that comes to fruition. Witnessed diamond ending up in windowless room this week as booked as they were running at full capacity.

I just had a quick read and I didn't see it mentioned, but can anyone say whether Doubletree offer a drinks voucher or anything to make up for lack of a lounge?

My +1 has a course to undertake nearby so she's looking at DT. How's it been lately? Any improvements or what's the general consensus for decent accommodation in that neck of the MEL woods?

No drink vouchers have been offered in my stays there. I have always booked the 'cheapest 'interior' room, sometimes Twin but have always ended up wuth a King/Queen with a window.

SWMBO much prefers its location over the HSW.

They now ask $6 to 'upgrade' from a Gold/Diamond continental's free breakfast to the Full option. IMHO, Unless you are looking for eggs cooked to order, it's not really worth it IMHO. The continental is fine and they have a decent self serve coffee machine.

Can get Hilton website rates ~$150 (~$120 occasionally¹) if you know where to book.

My last stay had a pretty good view.

¹ Normally within 2-3 weeks of the stays for this level.

A couple of months out and base rate over $200. Not much difference to HSW, but she likes the idea of the location. Should I know "where to book"? (I usually use the Hilton site with AAA or Gov't).

Would like a bit more info on this if possible.

Tossing up between DT ($170) and HSW ($250) in a few weeks time. HH Gold... normally just have omelette's for hotel breakfast... looks like we'd need to pay $6 extra pp for this?

Except they don't do omelettes.

So far I've been very disappointed with DT breakfast.
Honestly, with the money saved (compared to HSW) you can go to one of the many coffee shops near by, eat a proper breakfast and drink a proper coffee if time allows.

Ended up booking for one night in a couple of weeks. $135/aaa rate. Haven't stayed there before.

Does this help you feel better:

Hey thanks serfty....much better. Put a bit of desert around the funny place over yonder (I think they call it the MCG or something ;)) and it'd remind me of the Moomba gas fields during a dust storm, from a distance!

Staying at DT Flinders St Melbourne early Feb - first time at the property - any word on what to expect? I'm Diamond FWIW

Don't expect too much and you'll be right. :) In all seriousness, it's pretty basic but can't beat the location. Upgrades would be higher floor and having a window (but there are a large number of rooms that look straight into the next building anyway), the rooms are pretty much the same except for the 2 rooms at the front on each floor. Rooms at the front (01, 02) can be quite noisy especially on a Friday night or weekends. If you choose the back rooms, make sure it is level 8 and above, otherwise you'll hear the humming of the air-conditioning system next door. Also, since the demise of HSW, they get a lot of status pax, I was told at one stage over 60 diamonds in 1 night so don't be disappointed if upgrades are not forthcoming. Hope this helps.

Yeh I'd second that advice to check-in online, honestly there's not much to really upgrade you to, and at least of you OLCI then you can hopefully ensure you have a window and are high enough to avoid the worst of the street noises.
I was advised by both @JessicaTam and @straitman (both regulars at the DT now) to OLCI, worked a treat

My thinking is given that the only real 'upgrade' is the higher floor river view, the fact that there is only (4??) of them and the closure of HSW means you're extremely unlikely to actually be upgraded in any sense that elite pax are used too. Plus since South Wharf closed the prices are ridiculous, almost up there with Hilton Sydney...that said, we love the location so it's still our default place in Melbourne.

As a Diamond member, we do get better access and I had rooms all the way to Level 14 IIRC. The room I had was 1115, so any xx15 room would be my choice from now on (and would have to be a higher room to escape any residual noise from the CBD)

Good point, I have actually only stayed there once as a Diamond from memory. I only clocked Diamond last year and I tended to do South Wharf when travelling for work and Doubletree when travelling for leisure, we only ended up making 1 leisure trip to Melbourne last year, most of my Doubletree stays have either been Gold or Silver/Nothing. It's a great hotel for a quick weekend trip!!
