Re: How do Hilton treat you as an Elite?

Does anyone have an update on a restaurant and breakfast? Are renovation/building works still works still going on in the lobby?
Renovation wise, I believe only the lobby and facade outstanding. Restaurant downstairs is ready, will report back tomorrow on what it's like.

The outside looks horrendous at the moment, with the temporary 'fencing' for the lobby works.. My gym is next door.
I'm sure this doesn't have any impact once you walk in the door though.

OK. Thanks for the update. I'm keeping the DT as an option to HSW, depending on price (i.e., when HSW is way over-priced).

i found the DT to be reasonably priced
Sure theres no lounge and no suites but i can pay for the amount of beer with the money saved
Restaurant was good but was obviously week 1 with service a bit clunky

Internet was faster than HSW!

Ill stay at HSW with mrs C but probably stay at DT on my own when eh prices are ridicuous at HSW

Agree. DT usually priced between $150-$190 while HSW can be over $300. I can't justify paying so much more just for the lounge.
Another reasonable priced hotel in MEL is Radisson with recently renovated rooms and good breakfast.

Booked my first stay at the DT for 2 weeks time... Will report back ( used the 20,000point+$92 option) so hopefully an upgrade from the interior twin room to a king room with a window at least... heres hoping.

Walked past today and they had big machinery in the small (probably1.5 metre along) corridor.. Saw one guy trying to struggle past the crane.
Hopefully no one has very big suitcases... IMG_5025.jpg

Edit: Not sure why the photo is the wrong angle... But you get the gist.

Ohhh. didn't know Radisson had been renovated, stayed there 2 years and was looking tired but not a bad spot. Made sweeter by booking under Club Carlsons F&F rate...

Club Carlson has a good promotion running until the end of March: Stay 2 consecutive nights get 15,000 bonus points, stay 3 consecutive nights get 30,000 bonus points. If you stay 3 + 2 nights you ready get enough points for free night. I recently stayed 2 nights in MEL for average $171 per night include breakfast.

Breakfast was average, much smaller selection compared to HSW but if you are only after continental, it's fine. The lighting in the area is too dim, couldn't even read the papers. Apparently you can order eggs at the cooking station but they charge extra for omelettes but not poached or fried ones . i agree with the clunky service, the waitress cleared my table when I got up to get something and took away the room card as well. Took a bit of convincing before someone went back to the kitchen to locate the card.

And here is the review as printed in The Age:

Fresh from a slick makeover, the hotel is slap bang in the middle of Melbourne's busy Flinders Street. Many of the city's icons such as the quirky laneways, restaurants, bars, shops and South Bank's vibrant arts and entertainment area are a short stride away. If you need to catch a suburban train, Flinders Street Station is on your door step. DoubleTree by Hilton review, Melbourne: Weekend Away

With no mention that I could see that only a couple of rooms per floor actually have windows!

I was very disappointed with the DT Melbourne. My hotel of choice for the last 3 years has been the Hilton on the Park. I paid more for the DT than I used to at HotP on the Government rate. As a HHonors Diamond I always received a Suite at HotP. Yes, every time.

When booking I chose not to have an internal room so I paid an extra $20 per night. I did not receive an upgrade as the hotel was full. When I entered the room I opened the curtains to see an office block about one metre away! I closed the curtains and did not open them again during my 2 day stay. I may as well have had an internal room.

I was traveling with two colleagues (no status) and I recommended the DT to them. They were both very unimpressed. I was embarrassed.

As a Diamond I received complimentary breakfast. I was not offered tea or coffee and the staff did not seem to be very happy to be working there. I was simply seated and left to it. The breakfast was very mediocre and I did not bother to return on the second morning of my stay.

The "bar" is three or four tables in the middle of the lobby. Absolutely terrible atmosphere. A collegue ordered a Shiraz but they had run out. Beers are $9 each. I bought two on the first night and put them on my account. My stay was not eligible for points but I received the 1000 points Diamond bonus, as I always do, but the points were not credited for the $18 room charge.

I will not stay here again and neither will my colleagues. This was my worst Hilton brand stay ever. My next Melbourne stay is now booked at Rydges Melbourne.

Oh dear! I am just about to book the Doubletree Melbourne for 2 separate nights in May. I hope service has picked up by then.

I really miss HotP. I couldn't fault them.

My next Melbourne stay is now booked at Rydges Melbourne.

I've stayed at Rydges a few weeks ago ($140 promo rate was attractive) but found the (upgraded) room to be in a bad condition. It looks more like 3* hotel now so no wonder the price was good.
Not saying DT is so great but at least the rooms are new and clean.

I get 50% off food and drinks at Rydges or a coughpy breakfast at DT! And more than a one metre view ;)
