I get 50% off food and drinks at Rydges or a coughpy breakfast at DT! And more than a one metre view ;)

Yes, the 50% off f&b plus complementary drink voucher is good value. Just shame the rooms are dated and not so clean. It used to be much better hotel once.

I'm with you froggerADL, as a Diamond will stay at HSW if the rate is reasonable otherwise will use my other membership and stay at Rydges. Thankfully I was given an inspection of the DT last December and that was enough for me.

I actually don't mind DT at all. Wardrobe space is lousy but overall it's new and clean. Have had 5 stays to date including tonight. Station view rooms only good if they are level 8 and above, otherwise choose room 11 or 12 for view more than 1metre. Room 13,14,15 also have views further than 1metre but they look into aircondition systems so may get a bit noisy on lower floors. Hope this helps anyone thinking of giving DT a go.

DT Melbourne today expanded their room categories from 3 to 6 and the price of the station view room has gone up around $50 average. Bad move in my view.

They must think they have market share sewn up

Not a single room free tonight, so they must be thinking they are on a winner. However still does not make sense to redefine the rooms into so many different categories (it's actually 8, not 6!). I doubt even Diamonds would get a chance to upgrade to higher floor station view rooms with this new classification. :(

To be fair rooms with balconies on the top two floors are much nicer and I was wondering how come they are not priced in a higher category but charging over $300 for them... Tell 'em they're dreaming!

I haven't checked, but has HSW increased their prices as well? If not, I'm thinking the difference between the two (price wise) must be closing rapidly. Does an ordinary central city hotel command the same rates as a better quality South Wharf hotel?

HSW didn't increase the rates (yet). No doubt DT's location is better for business (unless you are in town for an event in the conference centre) but there are plenty of other much better hotels in the CBD at similar rates. For example, I've just checked out from Sheraton, paying $250 p/n include self parking and breakfast.

Stayed at H DT last night. Rate was $184 for a basic King. Full breakfast was $30. I'm Silver but will be back to Gold soon. 1st stay here.

The place was run by Basil Fawlty.
Check-in & Check-out were full of errors.
The breakfast ... poached eggs sent back as they were still very under-cooked (whites just cooked on the outside), coffee machine dregs draw full (when someone finally emptied it the machine was then out of water) - process took 20 mins, evening drinks waitress couldn't find a drinks list, then brought back wrong drinks (she couldn't find her pad / pen and struggled with 3 basic drinks). We elected to not have dinner at the hotel.

May be I'm too picky.

DT started off more expensive than HSW in some cases but quickly dropped prices. Have booked but haven't stayed there as yet (cancelled our booking).

I have absolutely no intention of booking DT-MEL until things settle down. One of the things I do like about the Hilton chain is you have a pretty good idea of what to expect before you book (often based on reviews, often based on known inclusions). DT seems to all over the place like a mad dogs breakfast according to the mixed reports on this thread.

A good read - I've just cancelled my DT booking and changed to HSW in July. And HSW were cheaper :D

I always thought the saying was a mad womens breakfast. But then I am always thinking about my boss at the time when I say it :).

Don't, don't, don't you worry about that, we'll feed the chooks and burn the bridges before we nip them in the bud! I'm from Queensland....where the sunshine is fabulous and the metaphors are mixed! (I grew up in the Joh era ;))

Hey sunshine don't cross the line here .........I truly hope you are not besmirching one of the true and original Australian Frequent Flyers in old Joh here. For god sake man he's got an airport named after him ...and what a dam nice regional strip KGY is.

By the way swanning_it ....errrr , your brown bag was a tad on the light side last month ......you'll correct the ledger this month ...... I'm sure......

I've been to this DT twice this month. Being a Gold, no upgrades both times. First time was at a higher floor with window and second time is at Level 2 a windowless room. To be honest, there is no difference between the 2 regardless window or not. Breakfast was sub-standard, if you have to pay for it, i suggest looking around, heaps of places around offer decent breaks at lower prices. The only good thing about this property is its location, which is literally 3 mins walk into my office at Flinders Lane. But I guess my relation with it already ended.
