Qantas has a sale on Beijing at the moment from Melbourne. Plugging in dates as per the sale I got Mon 24 April to Beijing returning the next day for $438. Which says it earns 80 status credits! That's $5.475 per status credit correct?

Sitting in Y for 12 hours ...

I can't afford to do much travel outside of Y so to get status upgrades it's mainly economy. Just decided to share in case anybody else was in the same position. ;-)

Vlocity160 you may want to look at credit card sign ups instead and ignore status. What I have found is you can use points to book business class flights once you start earning bonus points from getting new credit cards. No status but lovely flights become possible.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

I am sending myself a bit puddle-brained trying to find a little status run to bring up an addtional 40SC by the end of March. Easiest days for me to scoot off are Fridays and weekends but taking a week day off otehr than Thursday is also an option and I am starting from Brisbane. I'd prefer to do it in a single day so Im not adding accomodation to the cost.

Any suggestions are rewarded with my gratitude and positive flying karma :)

Cheers

Best I can see from a quick look is BNE-CNS-xSYD-BNE for $424.

BNE-ROK-BNE is also a possibility with a comfort seat for the extra 20SC? Fares are around $250 but I can't see the tax breakdown on the new booking engine, so not sure if it works out cheaper than the CNS option. Definitely quicker though!

Thanks for the tips! I found a Bris to Cairns with an affordable Red up and Flex for the return. Sorry I am lousy at remembering the fare classes but bottom line is 45 SC for about $440 and a simple return routing. Plenty of time to get some work done without phone calls!

Not the most amazing $/SC, but I've found ex-KUL J fares on JAL can be had for reasonable prices if anyone's planning a trip to Japan.

e.g. KUL-xSIN-HND(stop)-OKA return is $1500-$1700 return and earns 300SC.

KUL-SIN on MH 737
SIN-HND on JAL 777-200 (SS3 flat bed)
HND-OKA on JAL 777/767 (Class J)

Stopovers possible in Osaka and Nagoya also (I'm doing a stop in Tokyo one way and Osaka the other). Also works well to CTS for a trip to the snow! (20SC less than OKA though)

Could marry up well with some MH runs out of KUL. Book/search through JAL's Malaysian website.

Looks really good... is there anyway to get to KUL without being stuck in Y for 20 hrs or dish out $6000 for J on Qantas

SYD-CGK-KUL return in QF/MH J for $3600 & 320SC is probably the best compromise between SC earn & comfort & a fairly direct route.

I'll also be going to BKK and HKG, so planning to do SYD-BKK return with QF (probably in Y unfortunately, but at least EK A380) then BKK-KUL-HKG return on MH with a "stopover" for the trip to Japan for $1200/240SC.

~5240 MYR is the cheapest I've seen. Business Saver Type C/B. X or D Class?

Mine booked into D for KUL-SIN, X for SIN-HND, J for HND-OKA-MMY-OKA-ITM-HND. Basis is XXJMY - "JAL BUSINESS SAVER TYPE C FARE".

Fare rules are available on EF but in summary: No blackouts or min stay, 2 free stopovers in Japan, no changes allowed before departure, refundable minus 500 MYR ($150)

Happy to paste full rules here if anyone wants.

Out of CGK (Jakarta), is direct to NRT:

Fares - JAPAN AIRLINES

So not as good...

CGK-KUL J on MH for $550/80SCs ;)

Also I should mention that it appears OKA introduces at 500 MYR surcharge.

So CTS might end up better value!

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

All right, the latest DSC offer is upon us and much sooner than I'd expected. Wondering if I could please get some pointers as to qualifying routes I should focus on to maximise this - say my target is in the ~1,000 SC region? The AKL F run has been fun although perhaps not so stellar value without a sale.

I understand that for best value I'll need to head offshore - is something on MH J with a QF code involving CGK/TPE the go?

I understand that only Emirates to NZ will qualify if not on Q metal. I hope I am wrong. So International basically needs to be on a Qantas bird.
