re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

All, Just found this great site / Forum... I have 30 days to go and 245 SC away from Platinum.... I can probably see 60-100 from normal use in May... but I need a quick 140-180 to be safe...

Anyone in a similar place right now that is busy researching that can help, I'll share what I find....
Hi Anthony and welcome aboard.

it might be useful if you add a few more profile details, or refine you post. For example, what is your home port? What are the May trips you have planned and is there any possibility of adding a side trip if one of those destinations is more favourable for a status run.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Thanks, sorry, new here... Home Port is SYD... nothing planned in May, but I typically for SYD<>BNE or CBR or MEL most months hence being "safe" to assume 60-100 in the month of May...and Yes, I am looking for advice on a Side Run.... could easily "lose a day" here or there.... I could "justify" a Perth, WA trip... or NZ Trip as I run an A/NZ Business....

Always a good idea to have your home airport in your post or your membership details. Does make it easier to give you relevant data

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Anyone have any suggestions for the cheapest itinerary for 480 SC? much appreciated guys!!

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

How many trips do you want to make?
If you want, MEL - CHC will net you 120 SC in F, EK metal QF flight number, come back, double that.
Then SYD - AKL and return, also 120 SC each way in F.
Aud$4800???
With that so much a difference, you won't get any cheapies to get that much. Even flights within Asia with partners of QF will also not net a lot, as MH and CX will not give out QF flight numbers on their flights, so not a lot of SC earnt per partner flight.
Where are you based?
Are you time constrained, ie, can you do something like SYD - (Beoing 777) - BKK - DXB - LHR in F, that will cost several thousand, but will net the 480 quite fast. Or on the (Airbus380), MEL - KUL - DXB - LHR or BNE - DXB - LHR? One way will be enough to nab 480 SC, so maybe a return in J will nab half going up, and half coming back down.
Spread out, it could be 12 dom J flights within Aust if you don't want overseas.
Edit: if you don't live in SYD/MEL/BNE, and want a quick F trip, sometimes you can't link a J ticket to meet that F flight, so your flight from your home city to meet the EK flight on the east coast, would have to be on a different day, multicity, or different PNR/booking.
Give us more info anyway, where you live, and in how many trips do you want to "nab" the 480 SC?

Chasing brains trust wisdom on whether this is worth it:

I have a 50% bonus SC offer available at present. Currently PS with 0 SC as my year started 1 April. Paid QP member. Have a 120 worth of SC booked this month and another 40SC booked for July.

Can get DRW-MEL-SYD-CHC-SYD-DRW in J for ~$2k. By my calculations that's 360SC + 180 bonus SC = 540SC at ~$3.7/SC

Is it worth chasing gold as I'd have it for ~20 months and within that timeframe will likely have a U.S. trip, a Japan trip plus my normal domestic travel which is roughly one return sector per month.

I figure I can suspend my paid QP (worth ~$750 over 20 months). Extra baggage for the OS trips might be good but of minor cash value. Gold won't help much in the upgrade lottery especially as we'd party of 3. Slightly higher points earn. OW lounge access where there's no QP.

Im 50/50 on whether it's worth it. Thoughts?

I'd do it, the extra points earn on dom QF flights and any US/AA flights will be nice. Not having to pay for lounge access brings the outright cost down as well. More baggage, "priority" baggage and boarding are nice perks as well.

I understand gold get free baggage altogether on AA (for entire party). If this is still so add $25 per bag per segment to your calculations.

Back when PS did I saved our group of 4 over 1k on bags alone.

First and second bags are free for OWS and companions travelling with them. That's a savings of up to $60 per pax ($25 for 1st bag and $35 for second when travelling domestic USA).

$3.7 is pretty decent without going to the US

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

On booking flights for an AA run in the US can anyone give me a bit of an idea when it might be the best time to book? Depending on where you look for info some say at around the 90 day mark but others wait until a couple of weeks out.

Probably need to be "Required" fields in profile ?

It depends on a few factors imho. Are you looking for a pure SC run (meaning it doesn't matter where you start, finish and fly through), or do you need to fly a certain route on fixed dates?

Generally I book mine anywhere from 9 months out to as close as a few weeks depending on the situation. It does pay to keep an eye on the value of our dollar against the greenback and also different specials that pop up on AA.

And the price of crownies in the QP of $0 as opposed to say $9 outside. Say 10 crownies each segment x2 per month I'd say its money well spent :) hic

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

My last MASA (BNE-SYD-SIN-BNE) is next week, leaving me 60SC shy of the 1400 WP target ... have decided to spend the time in BKK rather than SIN so booked 3K SIN-BKK-SIN with max bundle @ $685 for 30SC each way. Not the cheapest $/SC but the location and timing is perfect.

It's been a great 6 weeks of SC collecting.

* F/JASA BNE-SYD-LHR-SYD-BNE last month produced 920SC

* JASA BNE-SYD-SIN-BNE next week will produce 280SC

* 3K side trip to BKK reaps 60SC

* Two BA intra Europe flights last month completes the equation by delivering 140SC

1,400 SC on the knocker, and WP secured for the next 20 months

I've been WP for the past 10 years ... however, this year has been the fastest, cheapest and far and away the most fun I've ever had collecting those little suckers! :D

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Looks like I'll be in LAX & SLC in mid July. If anyone spots any runs worthy of consideration, I'd appreciate a tip off.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Hi Amaroo,

is it too rude of me to ask for a rough idea of what the cash/points breakup was for the following run
F/JASA BNE-SYD-LHR-SYD-BNE last month produced 920SC

of course I fully understand if you choose not to answer:)

Cheers

I would leave it to Amaroo to decide whether an answer with exact figures is forthcoming, but a similar route cost me about 380,000 points plus about $2,300 in fees. Of course these figures are moot points now as FASA is no longer available.

re: Discussion/Q&A on Best QF Status Run Options

Thinking about my question after I posted it I wish I hadn't asked as it is a bit too rude but also because since I discovered for myself that FASA has gone.
Thanks for your reply

... and Amaroo please ignore my question :)
