As a wine newbie, what's the advantage of a magnum above a normal 750ml bottle?
Not much. But if you aim to store for a newborn's 18th or something, it oxidises slower, so more fruit and less of a leather chair.

Production costs for magnums are probably also much higher due to the non-standardized format. So I guess there's a "bang-for-buck" argument, if the cost is just 2x 750ml price.

1) Prestige.
2) Should age longer than the 750ml version (matures slower).
3) Great gift idea.
4) Travels better (I've taken magnums as gifts to people I know in Canada several times).
5) Celebration event bottle (wow factor).

And even bigger than magnum is even better :)
I had a double magnum of Lakes Folly Cabernets for my 50th and have a magnum of Grange set aside for my 60th (should I make it).

The magnum bottle is thicker than the 750ml one, so oxidize slower. But I found it is harder to store unless you have a proper cellar, most wine fridges are designed for 750ml bottle.

The cabernet six is an interesting mix - the 2012 Edward Salters are discounted to $65 on the site from $100 and there's two in the half dozen. The Devil's lair is a nice wine too. That's not counting the black label and mamre brook (bad vintage on that one tho). For $159 it looks like a pretty good deal to me.

But I'm eyeing off the 6 x 2013 Wynn's black label for $150. Nice to buy with a bit of age and usually very nice. Anyone want to talk me out of it? Maybe some tale about how usually we get the wynn's black for $15?

These don’t seem to be coming up for me on the site. Maybe have to be a certain level of member?

Can Lakes really go pass the “dull” phase and get better? I still have a few bottles 2011 Lakes...

Sadly, that is one wine I've never taken to. A friend of mine brings out some each birthday and to me there's usually something tastier on the table. I find it has a not so nice earthy taste even after a decant and breathe...

It is fruity when young, and get earthy when aged. Will open a bottle this weekend and see how it goes. 2011 also meant to be a great year too.

Give me a few wine names that were tastier at your friend’s birthday please.
