Flew QF from DRW to CBR via SYD yesterday and on arrival into CBR I picked up my ski bag from oversize and noticed my bag had been torn. I went to the baggage counter and showed the staff member the damage.
Then to my amazement she then blamed me for the damage as she believed I had put too much weight in the bag. The bag was well under the 32kg limit that I have. I was then given a phone number to call today but she warned me that nothing will probably come of it.
Finally when I arrived at my hotel room late last night I did an online claim but in the email reply it stated it could be 15 days before they reply. I fly back in a week and my current ski bag is no longer useable.
Any thoughts on what else I can do?

Just wondering what weight was in the bag? I thought there was a safety limit of 23 kilos per bag?

Ok. I remember years ago with a 32 kilo limit I had to repack as I was told by check in staff that OH&S requirement was 23. That was overseas somewhere.

After travelling several times with soft ski bags (usually padded with clothes etc), I finally gave up and bought a Sportube. I don't think I've EVER had a soft bag which has lasted more than 2 trips without some damage. The Sportube has done over 10 o/s round trips (several of them with added extra legs - e.g. Aus-US-UK-Sin-Aus) without any damage to it or the contents. In addition, a lot of airlines now require you to sign a damage waiver unless you have a hard case. The main disadvantage of the ski tube is that there isn't a lot of room for anything other than skis & poles. But QF are one of the few airlines that currently don't insist that your ski bag has no clothing etc in it.

Really? My Dakine twin bags have done at least 4 oseas trips through multiple transits, airports and cities with no damage.

Maybe just some bad luck, but hope you get it repaired!

The one I bought for our NZ trip last year lasted the one trip only......but I did have 2 pairs of skis, 2 pairs of stocks and two pairs of boots in it (and it was just a cheapy Aldi).

For the OP, maybe buy a replacement in CBR or Cooma and try to submit a claim to either QF or travel insurance if it's worth it.

Thanks for the replies. The bag has down four previous return trips from DRW including one from Falls Creek three weeks ago. It was still in really good condition and why I am annoyed by the the response of the baggage staff member in CBR. Called the baggage number today but they were not much help as the claims does not work on weekends. I will keep you posted with the outcome.

Slightly OT, but do you recall the brand and purchase price? Our Aldi looked good but obviously wasn't meant for what we did with it but it was only about $60 ( I think) so no real loss. Our old ski bags were fine but just looking dated and offered very little protection and they got shuffled off to Lifeline so I'm also in the market for a new bag. What's the general consensus of good hard wearing quality and how much we should expect to pay?

I have just bought a douchebag, have great reputation but haven't had a chance to use it yet. Will be taking it to Japan with 2x skis, boots, poles at the end of the year. Not cheap though. Prior to thy I have always gone a single $50 cheapy soft bag with all my clothes shoved in for solo travel.

I picked up a Kathmandu sno-roller for $50 on-sale that has survived a couple of trips. Even better - I made an internal frame out of a couple of pieces of timber and an adjustable tent-pole which makes it stiff enough to use as a roof-box! Although if Aldi ever re-stock those X2 boxes they were doing for $300 I'll buy one of those.

Hope you got a DEAL :p

Well hopefully not a NADEAL... but just a DEAL

It is an ocean and earth 190cm bag fully padded and on wheels. I brought it in Jindabyne a couple of years ago for around $180.

Ocean and Earth 'Global Explorer' is our 'bag of choice' in our household. Great gear, pretty tough.
Where did the bag fail?
I did have a O&E fail along a handle seam due to careless baggage handlers failing to recognise we had seriously overloaded the bag and failing to take the necessary caution.

Cost $10 AUS to have it fixed in Thailand. Still going strong...

SportsTube for MrsB (was $20 in Tokyo on sale) & Burton wheelie snowboard bag for me. Both have been dragged through the snowy streets of Hokkaido, many times.

I agree. Not very savoury.

They are from Europe not US/Aus, I have no idea what the background is with the name but to tell you the truth I don't really care for or against it. Rather it is carrying some pretty exy gear and has some of the best reviews going around being pretty much the lightest roller bag on the market.
