Or you just use the points for giftcards if you earn a sufficient level of points from your work to get free flights anyway

Suncorp Clear Options Platinum Visa looks pretty good:

  • $59 annual fee first year, rising to $199 in second (add $49 to get QFF points)
  • $35,000 income requirement
  • 1:1 QFF if you opt in
  • Purchase cover $200,000
  • Travel insurance
  • Extended warranty

BankWest remains the best option overall.

The best I have found so far are Qantas Credit Union, Bankwest or Jetstar. But the best QFF is 1:1. Will keep looking before my Citibusiness card expires.

Bankwest Qantas Platinum Mastercard seems to offer really good deal:
- $1 for 1 QFF (capped at 200k points per year)
- Great travel insurance
- Purchase extended warranty
- Purchase security
- No foreign transaction fees
- $140 p.a. on annual fees
- 55 days interest free on purchases

my choice as well! Good card!

IMO Virgin points are worth more than Qantas or Emirates due to the lack of fuel surcharge and so Virgin High Flyer is the best out there at 1.25 points per dollar

But aren't Virgin redemptions at a higher rate of points than QF?

Welcome to AFF. :D

I don't believe this to be the case.

e.g. MEL SYD Awards:

Economy - QF: 8K points + $34.97, VA 6.9K points + $16.08
Business - QF: 16K points + $34.97, VA 13.8K points + $16.08

VA: SYD-LAX is 94k in Y.

Maybe for QFF points - otherwise:

"Can I redeem my More Rewards points for Frequent Flyer points?
A. More Rewards points cannot be redeemed for Frequent Flyer points. You may be interested in the Bankwest Qantas MasterCard.

Is WW EDR the cheapest 1:1 at $89 annual?

I haven't found any cheaper than that, been doing my homework on a non-amex card for QF points.

I guess my question would be, if you can get the WW EDR card at $1=1QF for $89/yr, what is the advantage of the Bankwest QF Plat MC at $140/yr?

Simple: you can never have too many credit cards ;)

I have seen credit scores that would suggest otherwise. ;)

But the only reason I need a credit score is to get more credit cards. So if I apply and they give them to me what can I do? ;)

Edit to add: and I accept that others may have different circumstances, so your point is well made :)

So where are we at then?

I've got an EDR, and for what it is its a good value card - right at the minute its my only points earning master/visa. Given the arbitrary credit hold this card suffers though (o/s bookings) not to mention exorbitant o/s charges I live with a constant unsettled feeling when I travel on this card - I have a couple of Amex and a 28 degrees too, but really _really_ need a decent points earning backup, preferably one that earns to VA or at least can be transferred to VA/others. I almost went for the VA flyer yesterday as I got a targeted email with 30K sign-on, until I noticed the immediate charge for overdrawing the credit limit ... This sometimes happens and can usually be fixed within a day or two when it does and so long as no charge is made unless one crosses the statement border I don't mind, but an immediate charge just seems too harsh to me. The co-branded offerings from the banks just leave me utterly cold with their 0.5 and 0.625 master/visa earn.

Excluding ATO, I do easily 20x spend on Visa/MC to Amex so having a Citi Select sending 1.33 SQ/VA points per $1 domestic spend and 3.33 points per $1 OS spend easily justifies the $700 charge which I recall from OP experiences can be reduced to $450 or so if you can stomach usng other Citi accounts.
I also have the EDR card used mainly for channelling a small portion of monthly ATO spend together with some over the phone purchases. This helps to reduce the Amex charge at least a little and tops up my QF account.
An Amex Edge card for under $200 is handy for groceries and fuel.

Citi Select does seem like a reasonable card, but unfortunately I won't hit the entry requirement for that one. Citi Signature might be the only other option for 1:1 earn on VISA that allows VA and KRIS transfers.

Many go that way and not just on eligibility. Weighing up the extra $305 higher fee for the additional .33 FF per $ points earn is a factor.
SQ, VA and CX provide some nice options.
