COVID-19 in Japan and Japanese waters

I am watching this thread with a little more interest now as we have a RTW trip in Apr that includes:
  • SG, transit.
  • JP, 1 day stop for MrsM to do some shopping.
  • UK, was a stop, but now transit. Has nothing to do with the outbreak we just decided to spend more time in the US. I would have dropped this leg out of the mix but could not get a JP-US F flight so we are going the long way to the US.
  • US (NYC), primary destination.
  • JP, was a stop, but now transit. Changed as I need to get back earlier.
Our trip is F rewards and at the moment we are still planning on going. Like @RooFlyer mentions I am now watching and more worried about any future quarantine issues based on travelling from-to or transit locations. If these come into play I will leave it to the last minute and possibly cancel the entire trip and may in the interim request QF release some seats AU-US (NYC) as back up.

I maybe different from others as this is not a must have trip, we have been to all these locations before and was booked as a points burning activity. All accomodation is refundable so that is of no concern and if travel bans are put in place it is likely that any points cancellation fees will be waived. Our decision to stay or go will be made at 48 hours prior to the first flight.

12 more in Hokkaido, taking their total to 66. Talk of a possible cluster pertaining to a trade exhibition in Kitami that ran February 13-15 with around 700 participants.

Total Japan deaths to 9 with the demise of a 70+ male in Wakayama, which had the hospital cluster.

Diamond Princess: one more death (female 70s) and one more infection in the general community from the released passengers, this time Shizuoka's first confirmed case.

The Tohoku region now has its first confirmed positive, a Sendai resident once again courtesy of the Diamond Princess. So I think that's now three prefectures that got their first cases from people let (prematurely) off the cruise ship.

And as has been (more) widely reported (than for the Japanese nationals), a British passenger from the Diamond Princess has died, taking Japan's total to 11.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, have all the deaths been of persons of Asian heritage, or are there some of Caucasian heritage?

The guy who tested positive in Shizuoka after leaving the Diamond Princess on February 20 went to his sports club (gym) the same day and on February 22 to use the bathing facilities. 140 people are now being chased up as a result.

We have friends skiing in Japan at the moment. They say the slopes are empty.
They are due back in Sydney at the end of the week.

What is to become of the boat? Six months deep-cleaning? Towed out to sea and burnt? Renamed?
There has been a contract out for complete sanitation and I understand that sometime in mid April it will be cruising again. Just checked and next cruise date is April 29 for Golden Week.

there’s been a bit of controversy in in Australia because a number of contract cleaners have received texts from their employer offering them a ‘free trip to Japan’ all PPE provided without explicitly saying it was to disinfect the diamond princess. TBF the pay seemed good at first but maybe not enough to compensate for the fact that you’ll probably end up in quarantine when you’re done with the job.
