Coronavirus (COVID-19) Respiratory illness - Effect on Travel

Flew China Airlines last night from Auckland to Brisbane, all the cabin crew were wearing face masks, plane was empty not sure how they would be making nay money at the moment.

When you say "empty", how many do you estimate were travelling either throughout the plane or in the class you were in?

I'm with Dr. Ron on this. OK, granted I live in Singapore, but I feel totally comfortable going back there next week (been working remotely in Australia this week, for non virus related reasons). I think for some reason (climate or resources being thrown at it or both) , it is not "exploding" like it is elsewhere, just a trickle of new cases.

Interestingly our company has banned travel to/from China, South Korea & Italy, but not Singapore and Japan (Iran already banned for other reasons of course).

Leisure travel is supposed to be about leisure, not being screened left, right and centre, and having the risk of flights, borders cancelling / closing at any minute - no thanks!

From Vietnam. The tourist hotspots are about 75% less busy because I hear Japan and Korea and Singapore told their people to reconsider. So crossing the road here is not a drama. Had a wisdom tooth pulled out for $AUD65 and a higher quality ceramic molar crown for $263 kangaroubles. Something is wrong when USA return costs less than Asia return, but it appears so. Here, the taxi drivers issues masks, and you may have many temperature checks. I've not booked other flights, because the airlines refuse to say we will look after you if you get stranded. On the way over, I noticed Sydney Airport Intnl shops had massive customer loss or empty. I speculate short and sweet it will not be for the airlines.

We have a Mediterranean cruise starting on 28/3 and have been advised that we will be refused boarding if travelled from or through China, including Hong Kong. We rebooked our flights through SIN some weeks ago, so are still OK at this stage. The cruise includes Israel, who has the same ban.
The cruise is now in doubt as Israel has extended the ban to visitors who have been to Japan, Singapore & Thailand. All depends on whether transiting SIN on BA16 counts as "visiting" Singapore.

Transiting HK for less than an hour was an indication for refusal to embark on Celebrity.

Yes, I expect the same rule will apply to our cruise. But must go through the process of having the cruise company confirm and then give us our options.

You will be off the plane in SIN, and so if they are listing Singapore then being on the ground at SIN would most likely be treated as Singapore.

Japan closing all schools until the end of March. Will be interesting to see who follows suit, if anyone as i don't recall any media regarding children contracting it.

We're now resigned that our May trip to Europe is cactus .... just need to wait for the airlines or Gov to make the call and then its a simple cancellation without penalty. For the first time ever, we've not made any land bookings - what a time to do it :)

I'm not worried about catching the virus, I'm worried about being stuck in a hotel for an indefinite time!

On that note: if that happens, do you have to pay the room rate for it? 🤑

Kids do indeed get it, but this action isn't necessarily to protect them. Available evidence suggests that kids are much more likely to be asymptomatic, so you could have a whole class infected without anyone necessarily noticing. And of course they will tend to run around at random... so protecting the more vulnerable requires controlling the spread within the less vulnerable community first.

I've assumed no but I guess the question is who's insurance might pay up? The hotel would be out a lot of money...

Notwithstanding developments in Japan, do we have a thread focused on what's happening domestically in relation to national emergency response yet?
