Let me start by saying that there was nothing wrong with the service itself in the SYD FLounge, the food, massage etc was fantastic. However, one thing that really annoyed me last Friday in the SYD FLounge was what I considered to be a rather rude, perhaps ignorant, woman who was eating brunch in the dining area. She was doing so whilst simultaneously carrying on a mobile phone conversation. In order to keep eating with knife and fork in hand, the phone was on speaker (full volume) and the woman spoke loudly enough so that the conversation could easily be heard within 10-15 yards (probably further). Many people looked over at her and shook their head in disbelief but the woman just carried on. One of the waiting staff went over and spoke to her, quietly so not to embarrass her, but she basically ignored him and carried on. No respect for the staff and absolutely no consideration for fellow travellers in the dining area. And to top this off, was speaking with her mouth full of food, something my mum told me not to do when I was a kid. This went on for as long as it took to eat her meal. Not sure what can be done, but there, I got that off my chest. End of rant. Apology.

Goodonya, it is a fairly common occurrence that people will use loudspeaker on their phone to conduct a conversation in the lounge.

I am not sure the inconsiderate actions of one should ruin the rest of the experience as you noted the rest was fantastic.

This is a problem in lounges. Rude people talking loudly on the phone or put it on speaker or Skype.

For some reason Qantas chose to enforce dress codes but pay absolutely no attention to behaviour codes which IMO can be much more disturbing.

Some people need to use loudspeaker, but should be more considerate of others. I actually have sympathy for the staff here. Pretty tough scenario. At least they tried to speak with the person in question. Perhaps it could have been escalated and an offer made to move the person to somewhere more private?

It's actually quite easy to avoid these situations from happening in the first place. QF should put some visible signs (like they did with dress codes in Dom lounges) saying that talking on mobile phones is not allowed. Then create a dedicated area where it will be allowed to do that.

It was done successfully with smoking and it can be done successfully with mobile phones.
JL already have similar policy and manage to police it very well in firm but polite manner.

Very rude and inconsiderate. Seems to be more and more common wherever one goes.

I've been having fun with breakfast manners from quiet a few travellers of a particular tour group.

Agree-the JL policy is very effective

It is a common practice with loud speaker now... I had a customer who was waiting to see me put her phone on loud speaker and play some music and have a little him along and sing along to the chorus as well...

I had a woman speaking loudly on her mobile on the Brisbane Airtrain. I said to her "Excuse me, this is a quiet carriage" in a reasonably polite manner. She ended the call.

Why do they need to use the loudspeaker? Headphones are the only way to listen.

It's total selfishness and I've been known to join the conversation with little gems like 'don't you need both hands in the toilet?'

It brings to mind a little aphorism I heard recently; when scientists get to the centre of the Earth many people are going to be disappointed to find they're not there.

It's annoying for sure, but it's not going away. I'd rather ban kids but I just ignore stuff like kids and phones now. No ones going to ruin my day with their bad behaviour, I can't control others, just how I react to them

With dedicated telephone booth

Exactly! They didn't come up with this concept yesterday but for some reason it wasn't copied.

What's the point of a "quiet" lounge with no boarding announcements when pax allowed to talk loudly on their mobiles.

The QP atBKK had signs up with a mobile phone free area.On one occasion the Kangaroos (Rugby League) were there. All these fellows talking loudly on their phones. But they were the suits. If a footballer had a call or wanted to ring they left the QP.
And unlikely that QF could have a similar policy to JAL.Australians are just not Japanese. No manners.

On the other hand that's why we have private jets so one can bypass all this S...t :D

You are obviously not being serious.

Most offenders have clearly read all signs and deliberately ignore them.

Yep. The people who are rude enough to carry on a speakerphone conversation in a lounge will not pay any attention whatsoever to signs, and if they do they see them as guidelines which can be ignored.

Like the guidelines to be ignored bit

First there need to be clear signs and regulations, then if bluntly ignored after several warnings pax should be kicked out.

Until recently it was unimaginable to see QF Dom lounges thongs & singlets free but it all changed in just a few months after QF decided to set up rules and enforce them. Sure, it's not 100% yet but much better than before.

Bottom line it's their lounges, their rules and if enforced correctly pax have only two choices, obey or get out.

Re: Bad experience in FLounge – Rude

Not phone related, but on two occasions this year in PER dom J I've seen staff intercede with noisy patrons.
Both times done early and effectively and not something I've noticed at other lounges.
