Australian Reports of the Virus Spread

The match was in South Australia. They had travelled from Victoria around 21st. The cricket was the least of their concerns which was played last night. So over two weeks later.

So 14 days up then. So quarantine would be finished. Question would be though had they recovered, but infected another? Or had they been in contact with others who may have infected them.

Some people take a while to turn positive.

Anyway it is a process that has been working. SA Health must think it is prudent, or they would not be following the protocol.

But yes on the surface is does seem a little extreme. However you did indicate that they were close contact of a positive case. So this may have been a key reason why SA Health have gone on the cautious side. In NZ a person completed international quarantine and turned positive afterwards creating a small cluster.

Victorians aren't required to quarantine in SA though. If he was a close contact of a positive case then he would have been captured in Victoria and in quarantine.

I think it is:

Cases and close contacts of cases test and quarantine for 14 days.

Close contacts of close contacts test and isolate and quarantine until they receive a negative result. ie May only be quarantining briefly.
On 3 January, the SA CHO said secondary contacts (contacts of close contacts) are quarantining. Listening to the video, it sounds like SA was already doing it with the last cluster. (Up to 8/24 minutes)

Afaik all states are now using a similar double ring process.
Was mentioned a few days ago that the NSW Berala liquor store had up to 10k in isolation.
(Given the store had almost 1k customers some days leading to Xmas)

But once the first ring passes the 12/14-day test, their close contacts are released.

There is also the self-separating principle.

Where the primary risk close contact (serving 14 days and not positive) is separating themselves from the rest of the household contacts but essentially under the one roof.

The household contacts are also quarantining during the same 14 days.

Sorry if there I was any confusion. I meant as Vic is implementing it.

You have pointed out that SA does it differently. Thank you for clarifying.

Double ring works as it gets in front of transmission, rather than just chasing existing cases. So I am all in favour of it.

Agreed and it’s how VIC broke all their last clusters at the end of their second wave. It’s good to see the other states following this now, why not?

There is significant competition in the madness stakes. Vic and WA currently locking out their own residents is right up there.
Nah. SA won that race back in the early days. Seems that Vic and WA liked that idea and implemented it. I can't even think it's constitutional but there you go.

So last night at the Big Bash, SA Health authorities asked everyone who had been to Victoria after 21st to go immediately to the gates where their movements were questioned. Apparently a close contact of a Victorian positive person had said they were going to the match. Police eventually tracked him to a Glenelg Hotel where he tested negative but was put into Med Hotel quarantine for 14 days. We have gone mad.

Sounds like the Salem witch trials, as per Miller’s The Crucible:

I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!

Round ‘em up and burn, er, quarantine ‘em!
