ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

Amex Qantas Ultimate has no points limit on 1.5 per dollar and runs 2.5 per dollar on Qantas.

Well I just tried to use some VBA points for Sunday and their ANYSEAT deal is about as generous as QF.....not!

With BAS due on Tuesday 28th to the Australian Taxation Office a number of folks may want to go $10000 plus 1.02% on an AMEX 1.5 point per dollar card.

Just thought that people might like to know that Amex is being accepted, and although it mentions the trial date end being 17th April, I've just successfully paid $10K on Amex and it's well past the trial end date.

Can a second credit card transaction be made for the same bill, for amounts over $10K?

However, I must say that thanks to Amex's previous bonus, I find the thought of paying $106 for those points not so appealing.

Can a second credit card transaction be made for the same bill, for amounts over $10K?

Years ago I worked for an energy company and we had a rule that only 10k could be paid via credit card.

People soon worked out that they could keep paying and paying over and over for 10k each time. The energy company boffins took a while to catch onto that one..

Yup, one account, the second transaction immediately after finishing the first one.

Sorry for going OT again but my mother told me that my brother received his $900 bonus check already. Funny thing is he has not worked for over 3 years but he did pay some tax in 2007-2008. It will come in handy for him as he needs the money....

Hmmm.. Just discovered an interesting thing, somewhat unintentionally.

  • Super contibution by an employer not made by the due
  • Super Guarantee Charge form submitted
  • Super payments in full + pseduo-interest have to be sent to the ATO
  • ATO is happy to accept card payment for this
  • Funds get remitted to the employees super fund
Apart from the card surcharge, the only other "cost" is $20 ATO admin fee per employee.

Of course, there is a BIG catch, which is the deductability of the super contributions is lost. So don't try this at home folks ;)

But if you happen to have had an administrative oversight and be required to pay the SGC, at least you can earn some points on it...

When I submitted my BAS using the ATO Business Portal I was interested to see that Credit Card was not offered as an option for payment on the final screen. Options included Bpay, Post Office, Direct Deposit and a fee others.

My main interest that an obvious link was not available. Presumably it would be added after the trial.

Hmm, this becomes interesting with Amex.

$1000 in BAS payment has a nett cost of $1010.20 and can earn me 1515 MR points ... I (personally) value MR points at at least 2½¢ each so for $10.20 I'm getting at least ~$42 in value by using Amex.
Good point about the possible tax deductibility of the charge - that reduced the effective cost in my $1K example to ~$6.92 for those 1,515 MR points.

I refer to Amex, as the card I'd employ is a Plat, uncapped, with Bonus 50% for first $100Kpa - unlike my (and most) Visa's.
Paid my BAS today with this. Seemed to work ok; I'll check for the transactions showing up online in the next few days.

(By using the online Portal, my BAS is not due until Today rather than 28th April)

I also submit BAS/PAYG via the ATO Business Portal. Very effective. Did you notice if they are linking directly to the credit card payment yet?

For a while last year they were charging me GIC on the two week extension. This was based on me meeting the criteria for BAS extension but being inelligible due to monthly PAYG submission. I got the GIC reversed and started paying on the 28th. Now I notice I get the extension again. I have a feeling it is a coding problem with the portal.

The cost of fixing the decrpency is greater than the cost of waiting an extra two weeks for their money.

Slightly OT: I heard from my accountant that the ATO is becoming increasingly less flexible with payment arrangements for his other clients. It seems cash is tight everywhere.

Good to see its still available - i have to pay mine by the 26th, for some reason - i rung up today and double checked it and that's what the woman said so i didn't argue with it.

I think the reason why there are less and less flexible is that they are realising there's less and less cash floating around and they're probably going to be the last ones to get it!

With the Singapore Airlines AMEX you get 3 points per AUD until October... so might be a good option for paying....

I've never tried this, so just wondering if anyone knows if there's any problem "pre-loading" your Amex (Qantas Ultimate) before putting through a transaction that exceeds your credit limit? I have a $50k tax bill coming up and only $25k limit on Amex - if I xfer $25k in before paying the bill a) will it work and b) do Amex still give points on the full amount of the charge?

Thanks!

I think it's still a maximum of $10k at a time, so just do it as 5 payments, and put more money onto the card as needed.

There is no problem with making multiple payments straight after each other. I paid $28k (2 lots of 10k + 1 lot of 8k) in the space of 10 minutes for my BAS and each payment went through and each payment appeared on my ATO Account statement.
