I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

I wonder which politicians have shares in the company behind the failed app? To keep spending taxpayer funds on something that is fundamentally useless, just to save face is appalling.

I deleted mine some time ago and rely on the SA one and state ones when interstate. It seems that using the Aps pings data so those on pre paid plans have noticed they need to top up more often as a result.
Yes. I just use the State one(s). 😀

Yes - because why have one national contact tracing app, when you can have 7 different incompatible state ones each with their own overheads and costs cluttering up your phone and the economy?
Irony?

anyway,
I prefer just the one state based QR app, Vic in my case, because
- I am not going interstate any time soon,
- I know it is active,
- I get a clear indication of my registration at a specific location,
- it doesn't need to interact with other phones (that I don't know are active or not),
- and the data goes directly into the system my local contact tracers use, rather than needing them to liaise with a nebulous federal entity.

The Covidsafe app, and the various QR ones have quite different aims. For sure there should only be one national QR app, and it should do nothing other than QR checkins. Having an app that is really the government service app leads to much more complexity...especially if you're trying to show an elderly person how to use it. The Victorian one doesn't seem to allow any form of check out, which seems odd.

Covidsafe was supposed to track those incidental contacts that occur through the day. As such it should work in places where QR codes aren't. As far as I know it basically doesn't work at all. In any event I erased it ages ago.

I think 1 app for QR code check in is a good idea for Australia as a whole, instead of each state having their own...

FYI the QLD QR system also does not have a checkout. We’ve been discussing that and consensus was that it just makes it simpler to use.

The genie has already escaped from the bottle. 😉

Anyway, at least we have a choice.

You might change your attitude if you live in a border zone, or do need to travel interstate. Not everyone can hide under the doona permanently - some people have to earn a living and/or can't choose where they live or where work sends them.

The technology to make it work properly was offered to the world. It's built in to IOS (and I presume Android). The government chose not to use it, with the worthless results reported above being the obvious result.

Apparently the Feds will reassess when NSW reaches 20 contacts found. According to their ‘horizons‘ this will be sometime in 2023. It could easily be put back though.

And “we” have spent some $8 million on it so far and still counting…
