I did research this a fair bit and I decided I was happy to:

According to a 7:30 (ABC TV) report yesterday, the Federal government is still spending $100,000 each week on this useless thing.
I’m wondering why you call it a “useless thing”?

I run both. I find the COVID Safe app useful for giving me (mostly) up to date info on restrictions in each state. The state based ones I have used tell me nothing but tell the state what they need to know.

My guess is that the technology behind the Apple implementation, that the government so stubbornly refuses to use, is similar to that used in their Air Tags, and they way they work is simply amazing.

ABC reported last night that the Covid Safe App has only identified 3000 close contacts since it was introduced, contrast that with the 9000 people NSW contract tracers were able to find in a single day via the state based QR check in apps and telephone interviews.

Both the NSW and Victoria state government have both noted the data provided by Covid Safe has not been used in contract tracing.

Conveniently the commonwealth reports the number of Covid Safe downloads, but not how many devices are still using it (a number significantly lower than last year due in no small part to the performance/battery issues it causes in many handsets).

Yes, and why wouldn't we? It's a no-brainer!
Everyone likes to eat. And therefore likely goes to the grocery stores.
How about the big three grocery chains (Coles, Woolworths, IGA) simply be able to report in a standard format to the tracing organization everyone using their rewards card around the times of an "incident".
And ONLY generate these lists when an incident has occurred?

Are there too many who already know where you are wandering?
Fred

PS. Can someone see a debit/credit card being used at a venue?
Or license plate recognition cameras checking your car's speed?

State contact tracers frequently requisition the credit/debit card transaction for positive cases to cross check against QR Check-in data and data provided in interviews.

Some people, many on this forum, shop with several supermarket rewards cards on them.

It's similar.
But Apple (and Google) refuse to provide matches to the government, so is of no value to contact tracing.

I would hope the grocery store has a name (and address and maybe telephone contact) associated with whatever card is actually used in the store? I have three.
And grocery store specials encourage wandering
