Apple drops iPad pricing

I usually say not getting next model but know I will buy one anyway.

Think we like Apple at our abode, 2 x 27" iMacs, 2 iPhones and one iPad.

Never had any probs. selling our used Apple gear either.

How did you manage that?

Landed on patio tiles upside down after number 1 son removed protective case sometime over the weekend and I was too lazy to replace it (or I was secretly hoping I had a legitimate reason to upgrade it )!

Number 2 did the same to my iPhone 3GS. Had to get a 4s then, what a shame;)

Please let there be either a USB (very unlikely) or a thunderbolt (hmmm, maybe?) port on the v3. If I could back up my photos from a CF card (Canon 5D mkII) to it while travelling it'd be perfect.

The little memory card adapter is no good?

The memory card adapter only works with SD cards not CF. Maybe though the USB one might be able to plug directly into a camera?

Do not expect a USB slot on an iPad ever.

I expect 4 or 5 to be connected via Thunderbolt.

Can you plug a CF card reader into the USB camera connectivity kit? That should present itself to the iPad in exactly the same way that a camera (via USB) does.

You can buy a CF card reader on eBay. They do work well. I've been trialling some for work

Hmm, interesting.

I would want to be able to plug either a memory stick or portable HDD in as well though I think, so I can back the photos up to another destination - last overseas trip I was mailing USB sticks with photos home as a backup to the photos on my laptop, in case the laptop was lost/broken/stolen.

Thunderbolt, please.

I fear USB is not going to happen, ever. I think it's a safe bet CF will never happen either - as Steve Jobs would have said (and did say during the Firewire redundancy of 2008) most people don't use it, and professionals / serious photographers should be carrying around / have access to something more substantial than an iPad. Please don't take that as me not agreeing it would be lovely, but knowing Apple it just won't happen.

In the not-too-distant future, the almost 10 year old USB/Firewire-based Dock connector will have to be replaced (perhaps with something built around Thunderbolt), but not until that kind of I/O is more common and I don't think we're quite there yet. In the meantime, faster wireless sync seems to be the direction things are heading.

I would bank on the retina display, some improvement to the rear camera, and an improved processor - whether or not that is a Quad Core or newer Dual Core probably doesn't matter given they'll choose the chip that gives them the best performance / power consumption balance. As for everything else, if LTE doesn't show itself now you'd think it would still make an appearance in this generation, after the next iPhone; you'd think pushing the capacities up after two years would be reasonable (I'd hope to see 32GB as the floor, with 64GB and 128GB on top, but I imagine the 16GB won't be going anywhere and I feel like they're deliberately avoiding breaching the 100GB mark); and, given the slogan and picture on the invite for the event, perhaps the physical home button will be made redundant.

Not usually one to rush to launches of Apple products but given i'm going to be in the US for the next few weeks there's a fair chance i'll come back with an Ipad 3. Old Ipad 1 is getting tired.

I'm thinking the same thing.....

My big concern is how will I justify iPad 4 as there are only three potential users in the house...

I'm sure the iPad 1 will fall and break its screen the week before the 4 is released ;) (right Markis??)

Or just use the USB adapter in the camera connection kit to connect directly with the camera?

Backup wise surely this is where online storage comes into play.

LOL, Number 1 son is available to assist as required, means he does not have to share an Ipad with Dad now, even if his has got a crack !

This is gonna be an expensive vacation for me I think.

Bose QC15s and an impending ipad3 :)

I agree in concept, but 25MB RAW camera files make it impractical most of the time.

64GB thumb drives are now about $100.

Personally I have had a Corsair Survivor GTR 64GB for about 18 months (son is an IT tech/nerd).

You can drive a truck over it, it's waterproof to 200m (which would do me any good!!), blah, blah, blah...

I photograph with RAW an swear by it.

NB: If you get the "Survivor", use the handy USB extension cable. They come with a lifetime?? guarantee or something but if you plug into a laptop on your lap and the USB male connector gets loose, they stop working. Sent 2 back so far with problem and since actually started using the extension cable - never had the problem.

RTFM (though I don't think they point this out in the manual).

NB: 128GB version now available - suspect around $150.
