AFF on Air Discussion thread

Welcome to AFF.

When you add to an itinerary (or make changes) the taxes are recalculated. While I have never tried this with an itinerary starting in MNL, there is anecdotal evidence on another thread that those nasty fuel surcharges may reappear. This may depend on whether the agent has to manually calculate the taxes or whether their computer does it for them. @Mattg may have a better idea on this one.

Like everything to do with contacting the call centre, the answer may depend on which agent answers the phone.
Thank you Jacques Vert! I feel like a superstar has just answered my question :) !! I think the agent thing rings very true. I have now twice added flights to my itinerary through the call centre and neither payment has any logic behind it. The first was more than I had expected and more than what was quoted on the Qantas website for a stand alone award booking. The second booking the agent gave up trying to work out the taxes cost and said she would ring me back, that was two days ago and I haven’t heard back, yet the flight is in my itinerary

how about an interview regarding the ACCC loyalty schemes report in one of the next episodes? perhaps with @trippin_the_rift ?
could be interesting

@trippin_the_rift graciously agreed to come on the podcast again. You can hear both of our thoughts on the ACCC changes in an extended interview on today's episode: Podcast Episode 20: Are Loyalty Programs a Scam?

Hi Matt
As a very very new subscriber and internet “poster” I hope I am posting this in the correct place:). Just wanted to say I am loving the podcasts Matt, I listen with notepad and pen and jot down the numerous pearls of wisdom passed on by yourself and your guests.
I am currently in the midst of booking a oneworld award, my first and and with only bronze status as my points were generated mainly through credit cards. I commenced my itinerary in Manila after listening to episode 15 and your fantastic interview with James Green. I couldn’t believe how much we saved in surcharges! Thankyou! One question though do you or does anyone know when I add flights to an itinerary (through the QANTAS call centre) that is commencing in Manila are the fuel surcharges still reduced. Do you just pay taxes/surcharges on the flights added or is the whole itinerary’s taxes recalculated? Any pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated!

Glad you're enjoying the podcast :)

Regarding your question, I think @Jacques Vert has answered it pretty well and I don't really have anything to add. I hope you have a nice trip!

Still missing the ‘corporate’ edge that would be great to hear from on these podcasts. I’d like to hear how senior business people in big corporates manage their lives and travel patterns...

Hi Matt,
Love your podcasts and all the information on AFF!

Got a question re. the Air Chathams podcast where during the interview with Leon Loganathan you talk about using Qantas oneworld classic award for two trips (US and Helsinki). Leon travels from Australia to the US, and them returns to Singapore for a stopover. He then commenced a second trip from Singapore to Helsinki, however on the way back you talk about a requirement to avoid Singapore since it was a previous stopover (between trip 1 and 2). Leon then ends up in Kuala Lumpur via Bangkok and finds his way back to Darwin using silk air (paid flight). Based on other discussions, I thought it is possible to end your journey in a place already stopped. My question is what was the requirement to avoid Singapore to end the journey as I would have thought there will be more options to return back to Darwin from Singapore than Kuala Lumpur. Thanks Matt.

Thanks @gda380, I've answered this in the latest episode: Podcast Episode 23: HARS (Historic Aircraft Restoration Society)

Another 👍for the podcast. I really enjoy it amongst my other various podcasts each fortnight. It is really applicable the Australian traveller (obviously) but that what makes it so useful. I do find that you tend to favour One World and QF more than Star Alliance and Sky Team. How about an episode on their RTW opportunities and availability, realising that there are few Sky Team options out of Australia.

Hi Matt, thanks for answering my previous question on the podcast. I have another another!

My partner and I are hoping to head over to Winnipeg, Canada from Perth. We have enough qantas points to fly business (prob Syd-San Francisco or Brisbane -Chicago) late next year.
My predicament is the return flights are the same as round trip flights... we could fly return economy with points but that’s no fun 🤣

Any suggestions how to get a return airfare for a decent price?
Cheers

@AFF Editor if your Uber driver hit another car in India, he would have been bashed up by another drivers and public nearby.. You'd have to come to the rescue and pay everyone a few bucks most likely ;)

Hi Matt, these podcasts are just great. I look forward to each episode being posted every fortnight.
i have a question regarding Leon’s comments on the Air Chathams podcast about the Amex card. He said if used effectively the $450 travel allowance could be worth up to $700, I am after ideas about how this might be achieved if Leon or anyone else would like to share their ideas.
Many thanks in advance.
Larkey
