I will start this post by saying that I realise I can remove advertising from AFF by "subscribing" (i.e. by paying money). That's not something I wish to do.

I don't mind seeing advertising on AFF, but I do feel that the following advertisement (that I have seen here regularly over the past few months) is simply inappropriate for this site:

I find this advertisement quite seedy, with it's photos, descriptions of physical attributes and the name of the service - "mate 1 intimate dating". Perhaps I'm mistaken but this could easily be an advertisement for a brothel. I'm not about to click on the link to verify it one way or the other.

Anyway, AFF has never been seedy. Why is this advertisement being shown here?

    What do others think?

I haven't seen that ad here. Currently only getting priority pass and qf ads.

Haven't seen that ad appear here. Not sure if there are any rules around who see what though.

Mostly I see Qantas ads, but get a couple of other things like Budget.

I have noticed this ad a few times in the past and I have never clicked on it but it appears to be the usual type of add for personals.

Recently I have been able to ignore most ads and go straight to the posts but that Qantas flash ad is hard to ignore when it makes my screen jump up and down.

    Yada Squared,

I think as far as unsolicited invitations on the web go ..... this is pretty innocuous. Just be thankful you are not dumb (or desperate) enough to click on the link.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

I have seen that ad and read it, nice read;) but no need to click it.
I wonder if the advertiser thought that FF can find it hard to meet someone so they need the service.
Oh well I met SO while I was travelling.

I don't think AFF can control it, its a off site advertising link, that someone else controls. In order for AFF to continue being a free service they have to allow advertising.

Besides which - those ads are all rubbish. Depending on what your IP address is the "meet singles in YOURTOWN" shows a different commercial but probably the same pictures.

So what ads can we expect next? I shudder to think.

Young nubile females selling burgers? bare chested football players selling breakfast cereals?
Or how about suit wearing stylish businessmen advertising airline lounges?

Advertising works by introducing a gimmick and then making people think about said gimmick because you then soak in the product by association.

Like most other things - ignore it, dont pay the attention they want you to pay it, and you'll suddenly find it doesnt affect you.

And the such linked banner advertising is great on the net - see an unruly banner ad appearing? just hit CNTRL+F5 and watch the webpage refresh itself.

Or better yet get Firefox installed instead of Internet Explorer, and get an add-on to Firefore called No-Script. It allows you to decide which websites have Javascript enabled (its Javascript that loads up the banner ads). I have the AFF site enabled, but no links to other sites that try to load up when I'm at the AFF site.

For example right now, apart from the AFF site, these are the other links that are trying to load up (but NoScripts bars them from loading)

    google-analytics.com
    ewebtools.net
    mediaonenetwork.net

Of the above three - all three of them are related to marketing/web-advertising.

Other option is to pay the subscription fee and have no ads ;)

  12. Hi there

It's misleading advertising, there aren't any females in Sunbury that look that good:mrgreen:

If you were hoping to get that kind of luck in Sunbury, you'd need to be very frequently travelling.

There are a lot of "adult dating' sites which use some interesting tactics to lure men (mainly) into visiting the site, joining up for a 'free' membership and then upgrading to a paid membership later.

Some are legit and use legitimate tactics to find new clients. Some are dodgy or use some fairly dubious tactics to get new members.

I'm not going to comment on "mate1 intimate dating", but will let you make up your own mind as to which of those two categories it may possibly fall into.

I agree it probably isn't appropriate for this site of forum. However, unfortunately with paid advertising it isn't always possible to fully vet the content of ads which may be displayed on the site. The ad may have been miscategorised by the ad provider, or the wrong categories of ads may have been selected for the site.

BTW, I normally get "SYDNEY" (or Sidney, or Newcastle) as where I could be finding good looking women by signing up for a site.

That sort of branding is quite easy to accomplish as all computers on the internet can be tracked (roughly) back to a location based on your ISP. There are web services that do this, but also other methods (such as correlation between postal addresses and IP addresses of previous users to a site).

You may be right, although it's a poor situation if by allowing advertising, the website owner has absolutely no say in what appears. :(

These web advertising companies should provide website owners with a filter list that they can apply to ensure that those who use their website are not offended by what appears.

Is it that bad really? They had clothes on at least. Compared to the spam I get in my email that's quite tame.

Well, I guess it's a question of where one draws the line. In my opinion this advertisement is "seedy" and not in keeping with the general nature of AFF. Obviously admin and others are not that concerned about it.

In the interests of maintaining a high standard and therefore the intrinsic value of AFF, I would "d00t" this ad.
