Giving either side an uncapped credit card spells doom for mine.

The debt ceiling is a fiasco in a system where the parliament has to approve appropriation bills. Makes no sense whatsoever.

Nowhere near as stupid as spending three years promising (stupidly) to eliminate the deficit and cut the debt then realising... you know... reality.

They have an uncapped credit card.

The "debt limit" is just a piece of political stupidity Rudd imported from America after watching too much West Wing.

Which is why the Greens voted to get rid of it.

The third surprise....

7.30 report - how easy it was for Scott Morrison to make Leigh Sales look like a first year apprentice. Apparently, Scott is afraid of interviews - well he made very short work of Leigh!

Geez, the ABC needs to bring back Chris Uhlmann and quickly!

Haven't watched 7.30 Report in years.

Who's done that? Has there been a budget revision?

Umm.. have you forgotten the "budget emergency" already?

... it was the coalition's key talking point until the thursday before the election when they decided a deficit isn't such a bad thing after all in this economic climate.

Which it isn't.

Has the budget changed? All I see is blocking in the Senate......no wonder the debt ceiling has to be raised!

The coalition announced before the election that it is their policy to run a deficit for the next few years. Senate's got nothing to do with it.

The coalition announced hundreds of things before the election - none of it has got past the Senate. Little wonder the debt is going to rise:confused:......maybe Clive will save the country!

You're missing the point. It is Liberal party policy to run a deficit now. It wasn't for six years and it changed on the day that the election advertising blackout began.

If the Senate interferes with that policy that's a different debate. But Joe Hockey went to the election promising a bigger debt (for at least 48 hours) and one of his first acts as tresurer was to attempt double his credit limit.

Don't get me wrong, this is good policy. It's just that the 6 years before were a convenient fiction.

Seems like smart politics. He knew he'd face a hostile/rabid/failed senate that would block, be negative, and be destructive......so he went for a package that would deliver an outcome - simple stuff:rolleyes:

If you're going to be stuck with dud policies..... why would you want to position yourself where you need to keep going back...cap in hand, to get approval from the total losers that created the mess in the first place ?

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

I believe an even more unusual event has happened in the Senate. The ALP voted with the Greens to defeat the 2 billion + to be taken out of Higher Education. This was announced by an ALP Treasurer and taken to the election.
So Bill Shorten apparently is the first Opposition Leader to be able to break an Election promise.

The point is that it isn't a dud policy. It's a good one. The choice is between running a deficit and crippling the economy and inducing a recession. Obviously no one in their right mind would choose to induce a recession and labor in government didn't and the liberals in government (thankfully) wont. But they did get away with six years of pretending they didn't have to make that choice when it was obvious to anyone with half a brain that they would.

Some truths are self-evident.

And what's this dissing of the 7:30 Report? I don't often get a chance to see it these days, but always found the journalistic standards to be high. There's always going to be the odd dud-interview, but I find they're mostly the 3-ways.

Is there another balanced current affairs show that I don't know about?

Cannot believe Shorten and his education standards speech yesterday when his government was presiding. Clearly he thinks we are as stupid as the standards in the schools. Which is extremely sad for our future. They really need to butt out of conversations for the next few months that clearly relate to poor policies and poor results during their period of tenure.

Cannot believe Shorten and his education standards speech yesterday when he has been presiding as Education Minister over some of that period. Clearly he thinks we are as stupid as the standards in the schools. Which is extremely sad for our future. I completely blame everything on the 2 and a half months Shorten was education Minister. I mean really. He had almost as long as Christopher Pyne has had already in the portfolio and Pyne has shown how much can be done in that time.

Ok then. Let's remove the Education Minister reference and just say his government. I mean, really. ;) Closed the loop hole for you. And really you knew that from the next sentence anyway but let's just take the easy route.
