Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Not the best results! Over the same time the education budget has increased something like 44%.........maybe it's time we talk about the quality of the teachers!

And the quality of students I think.
Getting our children off triple caffeine drinks so they can concentrate in the classroom would be a help and then some help from the two parents would be a plus.

You mean, like the comprehensive plan in the Gonski review to increase the quality of teachers and teaching across the country and the quid pro quo in the changes the states and teachers unions needed to accept to access the extra $$$? .... or would you like to have a different conversation about the quality of teachers?

From what ? Where is the money going ?

We could maybe start by toning down the anti-science, anti-intellectual rhetoric that's been coming out of conservative politics for the last decade or so and increasing teacher's pay. That way maybe more smart people will want to be teachers instead of, say, lawyers or bankers.

Finland is generally considered to be one of, if not the, world's best education system. But there's not a lot there that conservatives will like, starting with its core objective.

Sorry, thanks to the massive run-up in property prices and consequent increase in cost of living, two incomes are now practically a necessity for most families. So kids get to spend less time with their parents and raised by strangers instead.

And what's this dissing of the 7:30 Report? I don't often get a chance to see it these days, but always found the journalistic standards to be high.
I think you've answered your own question.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

The guy on 730 last night made an excellent point about students having respect for teachers and parents being involved in education.
Rest assured that someone made the same point about students a millennia ago. And probably a millennia before that.

Yes, the education field is full of entitlement issues.....parents, students and teachers.

Sorry it is not a surprise that you have that opinion.

Chris Uhlmann was the superior operator....pity he has gone elsewhere.

I was disappointed in the 7.30 interview as well, how easy it was for Leigh Sales to show Scott Morrison up as the L-Plate minister that he is.

Credlin would be wise to limit Scotty's interviews to gentler, more compliant and less talented journalists such as Chris Uhlmann until he undergoes some media training. Sales wiped the floor with him, letting him out and then reeling him back in time and time again and he didn't even know that he was being had. He needs more than just the usual platitudes to get him through that sort of thing.

I would have felt sorry for him, but Morrison is not one that I would spare any compassion for. It's a difficult portfolio, and he's another minister who is way out of his depth. There are plenty of women on the governments back bench cooling their heels, perhaps it's time to let one of them have a go here. Even Kelly O'Stupid could hardly do any worse.

Re: Oz Federal Election 2013 - Discussion and Comments

Two points :
First : The ABC left bias 'n all , is light years ahead of the t&b frippery available commercially.
Places like the abc attract left leaners , so it's always hard to appear neutral.. we have occasionally been greatly amused when an ABC reporter was almost choking while attempting balance...

Second : the success of the social(ist??) engineers in changing society "for the better" (sic) , was perhaps , well encapsulated in a recent comment by a teacher who had sought early retirement.
Paraphrased : Essentially , parents accept little or no responsibility for educating their kids, the classes are often unworkable even for those who want to learn.
They kid's know their rights and know they can be abusive , disruptive etc etc with relative impunity.

Class distinction is never more evident than in education.
Private schools have parents who pay a lot of money and tend to expect or demand results.
The schools insist on a co-operative approach and the majority accede.

I'll take someone choking while attempting balance over someone not attempting it at all.

You would struggle to find any news & current affairs media in Australia less biased than the ABC.

However, this whole "balance" thing is a furphy. It's a sop to small-minded people who foolishly believe that any different viewpoint is of inherently equal value simply by virtue of it being different. It's the kind of belief that produces idiotic thinking like teaching Creationism alongside Evolution.

Can you expand a bit on how these "social engineers" have "changed society" to produce this outcome ?

Here.. are the rusted on lefties and righties….. along with a small audience enjoying the entertainment and the free beer…..
Maybe a small audience enjoying it but I am tipping the vast majority of AFF members are just so totally bored by this whole childish thread.

FWIW - IMHO - AFF is NO PLACE for a political thread.

I propose to you that the vast majority of AFF members don't even read it, just like they don't read any of the other threads here on topics they have no interest in.

I would go a bit further in your ABC comments, I would suggest it attracts the people who do the humanities subjects at uni rather than the simple left leaning comment.

As for commentators in the Telegraph in Sydney...........they certainly care not for the humanities.

I would be amused too - got an example? A Youtube clip of this happening would be great.
Thanks in advance.
