I had my backpack on the floor in front (after takeoff of course) and used it as a footrest. ...
I have had a situation when I was told to store my small (GCC) backpack up top since it was 'an exit area' and nothing was "permitted on the floor".

Note that I was probably tarred with a brush meant for someone else as some row 79 occupants were using their 22" rollaboards for footrests. :-|

I could imagine that.

My backpack was of course in no way impeding the exit egress at all. But if row 79 followed suit that would be a problem.

JohnK - I agree with your concern too ;)

I can't remember what row it was - but one of the centre bulkheads without bassinets looked pretty good legroom-wise too. (If 80A, 80K and 71D were already taken)

Row 50 (or 51 down the right hand side) I found just OK as someone who is 6ft 1. That said, on a LHR-SYD flight, the extra $160 for exit row was worth it. The 66x are less likely to have a baby around I believe.

I was about to post a question about this. Seatguru says a lot of extra leg room, but at 6ft 2, I find most bulkheads have less legroom as you can't stretch out under the bulkhead, which you can do with a seat in front of you. However, there is no one in front to recline either.

So sydbloke, would you take row 50 on SYD-LAX or LHR-SIN?

I have sat in 66C before and had a good look across. (Funnily, that's as far forward (66) as I have been in the bottom deck.)

However, it seemed to me there was more room in 66; people from the inner seats could get out without those on the aisle having to move. Have posted it, it was still very 'friendly' but I believe would be more difficult on row 50.

Only downside is these seats are now very popular and would be extremely hard to pre-allocate. I booked a flight for 5 months from now and 80AB were the only 2 seats pre-allocated in economy. I ended up in 80K which is no great loss but would hate to think what is going to happen if booking flights rather late.

It depends on when you fly, I guess. I'm flying QF11 on a Sunday and QF 12 on a Tuesday in March. I just clicked over to QFPS yesterday, so immediately went to start preallocating seats. Just nabbed 80K on QF11 and 71D on QF12, and this is for flights a bit over three weeks away!

Very excited about this!

Wow! Great effort :)

Yes the good old lottery in action again. I am returning from SIN in June and going back in October.

Very excited about this!
Why wouldn't you be excited? A Silver has been able to pre-allocate one of the most sought after seats on the A380 for travel in ~3 weeks. Does not leave much hope for higher status FFers on your flights. :(

Just as an aside can you pre-allocate row 50 bulkhead?

I had deliberately chosen a flight that had this seat free, and, as soon as the booking was confirmed, went online to grab it.

Shortly after settling into the seat, I was approached by the CSD, who asked me whether I would mind swapping my seat with a tall gentleman who wanted more leg room.

He emphasised, quite strongly, that I could, of course, say no. (I got the impression that he may have been badgered by the “gentleman”.)

I said no…

It's okay, JohnK - about a month from now, I'll be WP, so you won't have to feel so bad about a PS taking the seats.

It's alright. It is getting to be a real battle to find the right flights to book. ;)

Just need to keep one step ahead of them and book real early. :p

I've just been allocated (at my request) 80A from LAX-MEL. Although Im only a NB, it would seem anyone can request these seats as they arent technically exit row seats (in QFs eyes), despite being considered by PAX as one of the best Y seats. Being 6 months out from my flight probably helps too.

With regards to row 66 D/E/F/G, I'd say these seats have very good legroom despite the bulkhead. I've sat in row 67 and observed that some very tall footballers had plenty of room to stretch out and get out of E/F without disturbing D/G.

hmmm, seems 80A and K are taken on my flight in May Mel-LAX... and 50A and 51K... 71D is still available but i always travel in a window seat...

I'm assuming i can see everything that is or isn't taken even though i am a NB...

If 71D is showing as available to you on Qantas.com and not the other seats you mention, select it now. Then think about it later.

its showing as free on expertflyer, it doesn't seem i can book anything yet on the qantas website...

would maybe have to call them up and try...

spose i could see about booking it and then ask any window seat passenger if they would like to swap and enjoy it during the day light hours where i could look out the window then i have it back at night and then again for the landing which i like.. but seems like a hassle eh... be better to have either window of 71D the whole way...

i did go on checkmyflight or whatever it is and couldn't even see what seat i have been allocated, if any... be funny if i had lucked out and been put in one of these??? :)
