was checking out flights to the USA for August today and I don't know if it's a bug on the qantas site but the taxes for a one-way USA to AUS are more than taxes for AUS-USA RETURN! How is that even possible!?
This is because Qantas assess Fuel surcharges on ex Oz award bookings in economy at AUD120 (between OZ and west coast USA) each way.

For ex USA bookings on the same route in economy the charge USD340 (~AUD455), some AUD325 MORE!

It is better to not solely use the team 'taxes' in relation to additional payments needed as that can lead to inaccurate assumptions.

I suggest useing "Fuel Surcharge" or "YQ" if you want to express the main component of these fees.

Me, I just go '+++'.

Now for a breakdown:

For a 'discounted' 33,750 point redemption in economy LAX-MEL, the +++ totals USD379.27 of which USD340 is YQ (AKA Carrier Charge AKA Fuel Surcharge) leaving USD39.27. (This USD340 is not charged on revenue bookings.) In ~AUD those figures are $507, $455 & $53.

For a r/t MEL-LAX-MEL 67,500 point redemption in economy LAX-MEL, the +++ totals AUD418.94 of which AUD240 is that YQ (x2) or Carrier Charge or Fuel Surcharge leaving AUD178.94. (The AUD240 is not charged on revenue bookings.) In ~USD those figures are $315, $180 & $135.

In either case a return revenue fare at $1297 ex MEL currently is generally better value. (A NB world also earn 9000 QFF points and 90 SC's, a WP 18000)

It's a bit of a joke really, and that jokes on us. 27k points to fly from Sydney to Ayres Rock via Alice Sorings and the taxes are over $240. No thanks....

Does the 25% discount apply to the 140,000 points round the world Oneworld ticket? That would make it 105,000 points which is quite tempting.
I don't think so. Once you start combining non-Qantas flights to itinerary the 25% discount disappears.

There's something other than fuel surcharges going on in that $240. Look at the airport charges....

Try CNS/DPS/CNS, booking Qantas award on JQ (as its a direct flight) fees are around $250 + 28K points, booking direct with JQ same $250 but no award points required, what a joke and its on us...

True - seem like it costs $50.30 + $5.03GST to depart ASP  ! A return trip has two of those adding $110 to the +++.

Fuel Surcharge is $14 per segment.

Qantas 30% off on QFF Redemptions - Domestic Economy Only, Includes Jetstar - OzBargain

30% discount on Qantas frequent flyer points needed for redemptions on domestic economy flights.

Came into it by coincidence as I was looking to redeem some points.

It is better than last one when it was only 25%

Might be for Black Friday only. I'll update with more info when it becomes available.

The 30% also applies for Jetstar flights (which are usually 20% off already, so it ends up being around 44% off standard qantas points required).

Discount is available for flights starting 16 January onwards.

Happy redeeming!!!

Qantas reward seat is almost like a flexible booking (only 6.5k points for change and cancellation for all flights on a single booking) so it would not be fair to compare a flexi to a restricted fare. QF reward seat also have 20kg luggage included.
