This is because Qantas assess Fuel surcharges on ex Oz award bookings in economy at AUD120 (between OZ and west coast USA) each way.was checking out flights to the USA for August today and I don't know if it's a bug on the qantas site but the taxes for a one-way USA to AUS are more than taxes for AUS-USA RETURN! How is that even possible!?
For ex USA bookings on the same route in economy the charge USD340 (~AUD455), some AUD325 MORE!
It is better to not solely use the team 'taxes' in relation to additional payments needed as that can lead to inaccurate assumptions.
I suggest useing "Fuel Surcharge" or "YQ" if you want to express the main component of these fees.
Me, I just go '+++'.
Now for a breakdown:
For a 'discounted' 33,750 point redemption in economy LAX-MEL, the +++ totals USD379.27 of which USD340 is YQ (AKA Carrier Charge AKA Fuel Surcharge) leaving USD39.27. (This USD340 is not charged on revenue bookings.) In ~AUD those figures are $507, $455 & $53.
For a r/t MEL-LAX-MEL 67,500 point redemption in economy LAX-MEL, the +++ totals AUD418.94 of which AUD240 is that YQ (x2) or Carrier Charge or Fuel Surcharge leaving AUD178.94. (The AUD240 is not charged on revenue bookings.) In ~USD those figures are $315, $180 & $135.
In either case a return revenue fare at $1297 ex MEL currently is generally better value. (A NB world also earn 9000 QFF points and 90 SC's, a WP 18000)
