Re: (Eff Jan 14) Qantas increase points required for (some= discount Y) domestic upgr

What a joke it was already pretty bad value at 8000 points for a mel -syd 1hr flight.. Now they better not do this to intl,it's already bad enough having to buy a higher fare then play upgrade lottery!

[-]It's the longer segments they are hitting with a 25% increase.[/-]

I guess those small plates cost some.

Under the T&Cs

T&Cs said:
3.2 Qantas will use best efforts to advise Members of material changes to these Terms and Conditions and, where such changes will limit Benefits: (a) where the Benefit is provided by Qantas, to give Members at least 3 months notice; (b) where the Benefit is provided by a third party, where possible give Members at least 30 days notice.

Its 25% across the board, regardless of distance.

Looks like QF wants to sell more flexi tickets.
I guess that people who are traveling for business paid by their work place will be more likely to do that as they can save 50% on their points upgrade.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

At least they did not enhance the long haul upgrade cost. A 25% increase in a zone 10 upgrade would result in the number of points required being nearly the same as for a classic reward ticket (96000*1.25=120000 vs 128000).

Domestic upgrades must be popular. Is this change as a result of being able to upgrade from Red E-deals now?

Hard to say, as I can pretty much find 2 J seats on a classic award on most domestic routes with little notice so not sure they are that popular...

Of course a quick phone call to make it a JASA and all is well :)

I'm confused as to what happened to the three month notice requirement?

Is three months required? It isn't a material change to the program (ata removal as a reference)

It's simply a "price rise". Same as paying "taxes" on award flights. We don't get 3 months notice when they bump fuel fines up.

benefit is defined in the terms and conditions:

'Benefits' means any of the facilities, discounts, services or arrangements offered or available to a Member as a result of membership in Qantas Frequent Flyer including earning and redeeming Points and Awards;

Yes and the "benefit" is still there..

Certainly ... but - "where such changes will limit Benefits" ...

... the benefit is being limited by increasing the amount of points to be required.

Before this change, 40K QFF points would allow 5 MEL/SYD upgrades; after this change only 4.

To me that is a change that "will limit Benefits".

Disagree. The benefit is still there. It's no different to adding fuel fines to award flights. It just costs you more now. It's not limiting either. Just as you need cash to book an award flight for taxes you need points for an upgrade.

....but at a higher redemption rate/cost to get the benefit. I can see ngaelle's point about it also being an "effective price rise" as well as being a material change to the benefits of the QFF programme. Bit of a grey area isn't it?

I disagree with you.

Or to put it another way, IMHO you are wrong!

How can it be not limiting if you only have 40K points in the first place?
