of course there is a percentage of flight crew/hosties, airline staff who smoke. If x% of the population smoke, why would we think it's different for airline staff? With long and odd hours, extended periods of time away from their families, and the necessity to eat at odd hours, it goes with shift work. I'm a shift worker and I would say over half of the people I work with smoke.
Removing/covering the uniform when ducking out for a dart? Why on Earth should they have to do that if they are not breaking any laws, and not smoking where they shouldn't be? Nurses and paramedics don't have to, and sorry to all the flight crew fans out there, but I have a lot more respect for them than for airline staff - not that I disrespect airline staff, I simply have had a lot more to do with nurses and paramedics over the years.
As for staff smoking on the plane, I currently work with a few ex hosties (or hosts, is that what they call the men?), from a number of different airlines so I'll ask them, and if they have no objection - publish their answers on here. As I said I work shifts though so it may be a few days/a week or so until I see them.
It wasn't so long ago that JAL (?) used to allow passengers to smoke on board, and some other Asian airlines allowed it bot only to/from Japan. For all I know it's still allowed.
