Smoking rates of FAs

of course there is a percentage of flight crew/hosties, airline staff who smoke. If x% of the population smoke, why would we think it's different for airline staff? With long and odd hours, extended periods of time away from their families, and the necessity to eat at odd hours, it goes with shift work. I'm a shift worker and I would say over half of the people I work with smoke.
Removing/covering the uniform when ducking out for a dart? Why on Earth should they have to do that if they are not breaking any laws, and not smoking where they shouldn't be? Nurses and paramedics don't have to, and sorry to all the flight crew fans out there, but I have a lot more respect for them than for airline staff - not that I disrespect airline staff, I simply have had a lot more to do with nurses and paramedics over the years.

As for staff smoking on the plane, I currently work with a few ex hosties (or hosts, is that what they call the men?), from a number of different airlines so I'll ask them, and if they have no objection - publish their answers on here. As I said I work shifts though so it may be a few days/a week or so until I see them.

It wasn't so long ago that JAL (?) used to allow passengers to smoke on board, and some other Asian airlines allowed it bot only to/from Japan. For all I know it's still allowed.

So would it be ok for a QF FA to stand outside a Sydney hotel/pub in uniform knocking back a bottle of Heineken?

For me thats fine but I suspect their workplace agreement has something to say about it!

One would hope so, surely as "Australia's airline" the workplace agreement would call up Carlton Draught or VB, or xx_X, or even Tooheys.

:p

As long as it was a local beer, it would be down right unaustralian for them not to be downing a schooner or two.

If I am correct (and I don't know the ins and outs of the different EBAs, just previous discussions) ... both Virgin and Qantas staff are not allowed to drink alcohol in public while in uniform. (And yes, I have seen a staff member or two disregard this whilst onboard).

At my Place of Employment, we are not supposed to be in licensed premises during working hours. However they have blurred the lines in recent years because they have held training sessions and meetings in such places (usually a club). If it is late at night & I need to eat a meal & the only place available to me is a pub or a club (assuming I have the time), that's where I'm going. I'll happily let them breath test me all they want to prove that I haven't been drinking.

Other than what may be in their workplace agreement, which wouldn't bother me but may have an impact on their employment status as mentioned - no it would not bother me seeing any FA drinking any more than seeing a plumber knock back a VB, a doctor or lawyer drinking wine, or a teacher drinking scotch.
Can't for the life of me see why FA's are different from any other profession. Again, workplace agreement/conditions of employment notwithstanding, this is just my opinion.
