I just wanted to report on my refund experience.

I was booked to fly with Qantas Monday morning. I rebooked myself onto Virgin to fly at midday on Monday at about 6:30pm Saturday night. A refund was requested for my flight Sunday night by phone. I submitted my Virgin fare for the fare difference using the web form at the same time.

I received a phone call from qantas to request card details (original purchasing card has been cancelled) for payment of the fare difference on Tuesday afternoon. Excellent turn around. I have now received an email to say my original fare will also be refunded.

For anyone else getting a refund and the fare difference, just watch the calculation. Qantas calculated my fare difference amount by including half for their $7.70 card booking fee, as it was a return leg. The email about the fare refund does not include this fee, which is how I calculated the fare difference claim when I submitted it. Effectively, I'll be $2.85 short. Yes, big bikkies; I'm not going to waste a phone call over it. But just wanted to give a heads up in case anyone else would be worried about it. Will report back if the refunded amounts turn out to be different.

I also claimed for the difference between my usual train fare and a taxi on Monday, due to a need to get to work ASAP. Phone call today to say it was approved.

May help that the accc had been onto qantas today. Their basic view is that no one should be out of pocket.

Submitted my claim online yesterday for both Mr Esquire & I - phone call this morning from QF - will pay everything (was over the "allowance" at the time but submitted it all anyway) - and will be refunded today.

On my flight / airport experience etc this morning - QF staff seem to really be making an effort. Interesting times...

I didn't request a refund on my ticket. I went the route of buying a DJ fare in same cabin (Y), and claimed online Wednesday evening at 1945. Claim was for 3 adults for one day, total value $1580, including $960 (ouch) of DJ Flexi fares. QF customer care called at midday Thursday to say all aproved and get a card number to refund to.

I'm uncommitted about whether grounding was the 'right thing'; unhappy about lack of notice of the grounding (should have given me 72 hours to change my plans, I think); happy with after-event care. So thats a no thumb, thumb down, thumb up for a total of no thumbs for QF from me: I'll go for QF SG and VA SG instead of QF WP this year I think. I want some status insurance now.

Just checked and the fare difference payment has come through sometime today.

Really? The way I read it I could only get the fare difference if I refunded the Qantas flight. I might have to ring up and un-refund. Of course, I do have an email saying that they have approved the refund.

Well yes - because you get:

1/ The fare difference

2/ Your original QF ticket refunded.

So, you get a full refund for everything, and you get to to fly for free.

Albeit you get inconvenienced at no extra charge ;)

Or did I misunderstand?

The other person has rebooked their qantas flight and got the fare difference. My reading was I had to take the refund on the qantas flight in order to get the fare difference payment. So misunderstanding?

BTW technically it isn't a free flight as you're still out of pocket for the value of the original fare. e.g. Qantas fare $100, new fare $200. Refund $100+$100.

Misunderstand. You get the fare difference, and the cost of the original Q ticket, but you still paid the cost of the extra fare you paid to get you where you wanted to fly (eg on Virgin)

I submitted a claim on Monday online (for a flight to NZ taken on Sunday rebooked with Air New Zealand). Nothing back yet. Although maybe they tried to call the person in NZ - although I gave Q the office number when I claimed.

That's correct.

I'm not sure a "free flight" is how it's supposed to (or should) work.

Say original QF fare $150, new DJ fare $225 then refund of $75.

Total out of pocket is the original fare of $150.

(Now time to grab ORC on QFF and get yours for Velocity.)

I was given a refund of the original Qantas fare.

I have now been given the fare difference between the Qantas fare and the Virgin Fare so I have effectively still paid for my original fare.

I have also been given my accommodation costs for Saturday evening.

Net outcome is I have effectively paid the original Qantas fare and arrived at my destination 15.5 hours late.

My original booking is still sitting there on hold. I have the fare difference refund already. doctork said they got the fare difference without refunding the original flight. My original fare was a cheap sale fare and it would benefit me to rebook to next Easter, say. So I was just trying to clarify if that was possible.

I'm not sure about the ORC claim. Does that have to be by phone or can I do it online? It seems slightly dodgy to do a ORC IMO.

Thanks guys for clarifying.

I was forgetting about the original fare investment.

To further clarify, if one takes the option to reimburse for the Virgin flight in full, conditions state "original ticket will be voided" which precludes refund or otherwise on the original QF fare. Which I chose to do, not knowing when my next non work trip would be.

I'd still like to get an original routing credit, though my going this way and voiding original ticket may have stymied that.

What number does one call to get an ORC?

Just call the FF centre on the normal number and ask.

I'm interested in asking about this also.

I got my points back less than 12 hours after canceling but am waiting on money refund.

My money was in my account yesterday. I put the claim in on Tuesday for the cost of my virgin fare, so that's not too bad I guess.

My original refund was processed on 29th and back in my account on the 29th.

My subsequent claims were processed on the 4th and both back in my account on the 4th.

You cannot get it much quicker than that :!:

My original flight has been refunded now. Despite my purchasing card being cancelled and submitting a stat dec with new card details issued by a different bank, they have returned it to the original purchasing card. Bit annoying, but I'm thankful the money has turned up.

Now to the question, my original booking is still there in manage my bookings, with placeholder airports. Will this drop off eventually? Or do I have a chance to rebook it? ;)
