I'm 1.57 m tall. I seem to be allocated exit rows for 25-30% of my flights (despite being only silver at best). I'll be happy to give them up in exchange for a foot rest. The extra space gives me room to pull out my luggage after take-off to use as an ad-hoc foot stool - without that, with feet dangling, my knees and ankles really ache after an hour or two.

If sitting in an exit row is such a problem you can request to be moved somewhere else (it'd make other flyers who actually want that seat very happy). You could also as a PS log into your booking and allocating your preferred seat.

Edit - Just rereading your post, a quick question, does normal Y seats come with foot rests? I've never had the need to check...

Exit row is certainly no problem for me. As I said, it gives me room to set up an ad-hoc foot rest.

Y does not come with a foot-rest on most airlines. BA gives you a footrest, but not a very good one. The Qantas A380 gives you a sort of net to put your feet in, which is better than nothing.

Qantas let you do that? I thought it was against the rules - creating a hazard if people need to get out of the plane quickly. I've been told I can't do that on long flights sitting in an exit row - like many others I avoid them domestically and would rather sit as far forward as possible - it's one of the reasons I now select a bulkhead instead.

Other airlines don't seem to be as safety conscious, CX seemed to have no objection last time I flew with them.

Qantas regulations do require the floor in exit rows on 744 and 388 to be clear - which precludes the use of bags as footstools. Enforcement varies however.

interesting... doesn't the footrest in biz class upper deck 747 on the JK side extend into the exit area? or is the regulation just in regards to loose items? (either way I can't see the point, safety wise, of having the area clear during cruise... in an emergency it would be easy enough to push the bag underneath the seat you are sitting in to get it out of the way... or to throw it behind the crew seat at the door...)

nope not even buying that.... given the number of unrestrained babies, lap top computers, meal trays, glasses, service carts, people/crew and anything else that might go flying in a sudden nose dive (or how is it any different to someone getting their carry on down to access something inside during flight?)

I'm just interested to know the rationale behind the policy given that several airlines set up either permanent service carts (eg LH) or otherwise obstruct exit doors during meal times (I have seen carts sitting in QF galleys many times during the breakfast prep for business class).

The footrest on 16J/K extends, but still doesn't obstruct the exit.

It's just the same as not being able to use the underseat storage if seated in exit. So I fully understand why you shouldn't be able to put your carry-on on the floor as a footrest.

That said 80A/K are not "exit rows" so you should get away with it.

You aren't allowed to use the underseat storage during takeoff and landing if seated in an exit, but you are allowed to get your stuff down and keep it with you once you have hit cruising altitude and the seat belt light is off.

If travelling on the A330 international config with Skybeds all J class pax need to put their carry on in the overhead lockers for takeoff and landing.

Not so much told off, but asked to put my 5 litre daypack (which I use, not as a footrest, but as storage since no seatback pocket in front. I keep it tucked up at the front base of the seat)

I was caught up in the wash ¾ of the way into a 13 hour flight as 80A,79B/C/H occupants had been using their rollaboards as foot rests. An FA noticed this and told them they were not permitted to do it. He then noticed my tiny pack at the front of my 80K seat and said to me "you can put yours up too ...".:-|

I complied, but did ask for the CSM as I was not impressed.

We he came down I had an extended (pleasant) discussion of this issue with the CSM, commencing with me saying "I know I had to comply with the instruction and have, but I believe it was a little ridiculous ...". He was looked surprised when I showed him my tiny backpack but supported his staff.
