back to an earlier question, does anyone know which route will ultimately be A380 or is that something to be decided?

Any route that offers First Class will eventually be the exclusive domain of A380 for Qantas. So that is SYD/MEL to LAX and SYD/MEL to LHR via SIN/BKK/HKG. But there will also be 3-class A380s operating routes currently operated by 747-400 that have capacity demand, and eventually even the last of the 744s will be retired so expect to see A380 pretty much everywhere we see 744 today.

Nine of the 747-400 fleet will be reconfigured with Skybed MkII and PE cabins for 3-class ops and the remainder will be retired in their current config. But that retirement will be a steady flow as the A380s are delivered. The reconfiguration of the chosen nine will commence in the second half of 2011 (September has been mentioned) and obviously these will be the last of the 744s to be retired in future years.

But as always, plans can and will change with the situation.

I heard a rumour just before Christmas that EK will start A380 services to BNE in early 2012,the rumour was third hand so I have no way of verifying it's truth.

So qantas will eventually move from 747's to A380's and 787. Looking at the Boeing website it also looks as though qantas haven't ordered the 747-8 etc

Qantas has not ordered any new 747 aircraft. The existing fleet will (by logic) be retired at some time. Of course this does not mean they will never order future 747 aircraft, bit they do not have any new 747 aircraft on order. It wil take quite a few years before sufficient A380 aircraft have been delivered to allow the entire 747 fleet to be retired.

The 787 orders will initially be delivered to JetStar. When Qantas eventually received 787 aircraft (likely to be when the 787-9 is delivered) they will replace A330 and 767 on international routes. The 767s will obviously be retired and we can only speculate on the future of the QF A330s (move to JQ, move to domestic, continue international ops, retire etc). Either way, that is a long way off and many things can change plans in that time.

Considering the aircraft are not certified for the numbers of pax that JQ require at this stage I am not surprised, and JQ hardly has the fleet age issue QF has.

Which is why I pointed out several times that plans can and will change with circumstances. Nothing is fixed. One of the reasons for ordering the 787 was for fleet flexibility between JQ and QF.

Interesting article, a lot we already knew but some added bits and pieces - some extras compared to the Jetconnect next gen's currently in the air.

Also looks like they will definitely be taking delivery this year (I know this was something that kept on changing)...

Looking forward to seeing these flying domestically!

That article really does not reveal anything new, we already know both airlines are looking at the SKY interior launch.

DJ will have a lot more new planes, thats a pretty big difference . I think the battle will come down to J seating head to head, but on most routes it will be new versus old which should be interesting, those 734s are not going to be popular!

I know as much as anybody since I dont work for DJ, but I suspect we will see a lot more of the new DJ at the Avalon airshow where most of the relaunch is probably going to be revealed, thats my guess!

Coincidentally QF took delivery of the next of the Jetconnect 738's ZK-ZQD on Thursday with another two due before the end of the month.
