Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

I'm curious if you've had another one yet. So far I have opened 4: one was good, one obviously corked, and the next two have something wrong - ok with the first sip but a very dry, astringent aftertaste that is not nice. I contacted Rose, she said she sold it all to Dan's a long time ago but said it was a great vintage and well cared for before they sent it. Soft corks, the most expensive grade available apparently. So I'm a bit stumped, feeeling like I need to send the rest back.
I just opened my second bottle of 2014 and it is just as good as the first one. Maybe because my senses were hightened anticipating a possible cork taint or unpleasant aftertaste...I felt there is a tiny little bitterness right at the end and it feels like a young wine. I will let it breathe now for an hour or 2 to see how it evolves.

Anyone know anything about seppelt original sparkling shiraz vintage vs NV?

I wasn't even aware they did a vintage version but it appears they do - can't see much mention online of since when or why though.

Pricing doesn't seem any different so it doesn't seem to be a premium offering.. just curious
The original was a vintage wine until 2015, being the last year and the first year they swapped over to NV. The vintage was always a well regarded value for money sparkling shiraz that had some aging potential. Used to be a regular buy for me. The NV quality isn't nearly as good and I've stopped buying.
+1

I was half hoping for your sake that I was mistaken but it makes you wonder if they ever lived up to the RRP, once bitten twice shy....
I ended up contacting Dan Murphy via email as I would feel guilty giving this as a Xmas gift.
Didn't expect it but they allowed me to return an unused portion for an exchange to a different product. (I have opened 2 bottles as I thought maybe the first was a one off damaged/compromised).

How would Sam Kim give it 95 points and this review below is beyond me. The wine I have had did not have any single attribute described in his review.

Sam Kim 95 Points

Offering immense power as well as grace, this stunning rendition shows blackberry, dark chocolate, game, cedar and toasted spice aromas on the nose. The palate delivers outstanding weight and depth combined with opulent texture and chalky tannins, making it mouthfilling and delicious. Superbly structured and persistent. At its best: now to 2036.

Huge credit to Dan Murphy, they emailed me a return label and sent me this wine instead
https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_MYSTERY333/under-wraps-south-australia-merlot-2012 which is Clarendon Hills Brookman Merlot.
I have had their Shiraz before that I really enjoyed but I found this Merlot even better.
The price went up from $13 to $20 however I think it is still very much worth it. Just a great drop.
I tried to order more but the delivery to Sydney is not available unfortunately.

Have to agree @ste667, if I hear one more mention of "Doris plums" in his reviews I'm going to lose my lunch!

Just took delivery the other week of their 2009 Syrah from Langtons and what an astonishing drop it is, brooding complex and taking ages to open up it is a wine of distinction...

Was that a Brookman Syrah from Blewitt Springs?

It's the 2009 Hickinbotham Syrah:

Part of Clarendon Hills 'Grand Cru' classification, The Hickinbotham family are instrumental players in Australian wine history, and Alan Hickinbotham bought this estate in 1960.
Clarendon Hills sources wines from this stately vineyard to produce a single site Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and old-vine Grenache all detailed by the Hickinbotham family name.

The back label mentions Blewitt Springs as part of the address info, hope that helps...

Thanks for that

Probably similar to what I had Clarendon Hills Brookman Syrah - both are part of what they label as Grand Cru tier wines.

Also at First Choice - Wolf Blass Heritage Release Shiraz Cab Magnum $20 (was $80) plenty of stock online and in stores. Not sure where this fits within their range but at $10/750mL I will give it a go
$19 in a 6 bottle buy. This has often been 'given away' when buying wine bundles (eg 6 Bottles Pepperjack Shiraz or Cab Sauv + Bonus 1.5 Ltr Wolf Blass Shiraz - $99 @ FirstChoiceLiquor). I've not had it, but at that price I'm definitely in.

Can also stack with the current 2000 Flybuys for $50 spend to make this even cheaper.

Jacquart Champagne Brut Mosaique back down to $35 at First Choice. It is sold out online but in stock at most stores in Sydney

Still appearing as $80 in store in Forestville. Easy enough to order the same wine on the web with cashback on top

Just picked up my order of the Wolf Blass. Got 1 x 2016 and 3 x 2017. They just grabbed the first four on the shelf so if you have a preference get them to check

Yeah, Sam Kim is a complete shill. Disregard any score you see from him.
I have long stated that Sam Kim's scores are total rubbish. You can read many of Dan Murphy reviews by consumers who say the wine is rubbish as opposed to Sam Kim's 90 plus point scores. I agree with ste667; personally if I see a review with only his score and I cannot find any other review I move on/pass.

While I agree on the (lack of) value in Sam Kim reviews, I still trust him more than a random consumer review on Dan Murphy. That "random consumer" often disagrees with other reviewers too.
