Hopefully Europe flights this side of Christmas (not June 2021) otherwise there will be loads of expats very disappointed they cannot get home to see their families for the festivities.

One can always live in hope that things will get better, but gov ministers have stated on more than one occasion that overseas travel (to other than NZ and limited Pacific Island destinations) won't be happening in 2020.

My original guess was the end of 2020 for domestic and a year later internationally. But I also thought that seats would be limited as so many airlines and aircraft would no longer exist.

I don’t see normality in any time frame now.

Government ministers must act within the law. If there is a total ban, on health grounds, that might be sustainable.

But once you start to allow business travel to a trade fair, students to come and go, folk travelling to 'conferences'... it might become more difficult to justify? If exemptions can be made for thousands of people, what's the basis to refuse Aussies travel?

Well after I got out of denial about my European holiday, and then my Vietnam holiday....and then my NZ holiday I'm hoping ill be able to get from NSW to QLD at the end of the year. Perhaps it will end up looking more like the Grapes of Wrath pilgrimage.

Looks like the plan to get international students back in is getting closer! Which is great, another industry having some form of life injected back into it....

I can see a situation where limited travel will be allowed, but the numbers will be based on quarantine capacity. That may include students and some business travel, but 'going to a trade fair' may not cut it as a reason.

Unfortunately the term 'business travel' is being bandied about :( A look at the definition of 'business travel' is exactly things like trade fairs, 'face-to-face networking, 'exploring markets', meeting clients, etc.

If they mean 'essential services' that's a different kettle of fish.

If quarantine spaces are the limiting factor, then perhaps everyone should be given the opportunity for those places. If a nurse, paramedic, teacher or other front-line worker wants to go away, and is willing to pay for quarantine, they should have the same chance.

A ballot would be a fair way to determine access to limited resources.

It’s Adelaide, was already marginal. Fingers crossed they retain some level of international services!
I must admit we are guilty of not supporting EK in ADL. We have flown them many times to Europe but because of the lounge situation in ADL and after putting up with their horrible J seats on the 777 once we have since always departed from MEL or SYD to get the A380.
At the end of the day ADL is still only a speck on the map and I think in this current climate we might lose a couple more services in the interim. EK haven’t ruled out coming back in the future if things pick up but I think it will be several years if at all

You keep on going on and on about people attending trade fairs. It may be worth looking at these lists to ascertain the likelihood of that:

There are some International Trade Fairs and conferences taking place this year but all that I have seen are going to be virtual not face to face.there may be a couple of face to face Fairs or conferences this year but it won't mean thousands of business exemptions being granted for International air travel.

I see zero evidence of any planning for any of the 3 instances you refer to in your post. Yes there is some mention and dispensation for very limited circumstances for business travel (and their is plenty online about the lack of success with applications) and there is planning going on on how to resume the student market, but definitely not "come and go".

Two expensive professional development seminars overseas that I was attending to tag along with a friend this year (one this month) have both been deferred to the second half of next year.
