It sort of is...

I guess it depends how much you fly. For infrequent travellers the regular menu is probably fine. BTC is not needed. For frequent flyers it gives the option, for example, for light meals. Which helps to maintain the diet :) (for example the steamed chicken and salads and things)

I don't dispute it's a bit overstated (there's no chef onboard) but the ability to guarantee your meal and select from a very wide range of options, including some terrific ones like the Kyo-Kaiseki on relatively short flights (from some ports), is my kind of gimmick.

Agreed. A little disappointed not to see the Kyo-Kaiseki as an option on our two flights. Motivation for getting back on board...

Not flying ex-SIN?

I was a bit disappointed my SIN-BOM flight last year did not have caviar and had only loaded two BTC meals and "one of everything" on the menu for 3 F pax. So glad I pre-ordered the Kyo-Kaiseki otherwise I'd have been quite disappointed.

To bring this back a bit more on-topic, you'd think QF could offer a similar feature given how few ports it flies F from these days. An easy improvement in my opinion. But no, you can't even pre-select from the bog-standard menu in F.
