On this pitch, you'd expect India will probably have the same issue. While the contest between bat and ball is most welcome, up and down bounce on a day 1 pitch is not a good look for the new stadium first ever test match.

That’s an interesting comment. But I guess unless the roof covers all the seated areas that’s always going to be the case. We experienced the same at the MCG. We could see the shadow eventually creep up to where we were seated but we had enough of the sun by then. Did they explain why the lights came on? Maybe the light sensor was in shadow by then. Did it have much atmosphere?

I think this is shaping up for an Australia win assuming the Aus bowlers are going to perform. 1:1 would be a great set up for Boxing Day.

The new stadium isn’t a cricket ground, it just is able to cater for cricket matches but not like SCG, MCG, ACG and Gabba. Likewise the pitch. Variable bounce on Day 1. Can’t wait to see them batting second on a crumbling pitch

Pretty sure they said on ABC this morning the official figure was over 20,000 for day 1 - they did however say the numbers had to be fudged as they believed it was much less.

I'm afraid it is not such a simple issue here. Today, as it has been heavily cloudy all day, there has been no issue. The "powers that be" decided to shut the entire top level under the roof, except for the members area, because of poor pre-sales. Only 19,000 yesterday and much the same today.

The members, on the north side of the stadium, was in shade all day at all levels. All the southern side and much of the east and west ends square of the wicket, had sun at some point of the day up to level three. I was on the third level near the sight board but not directly behind the pitch and it was oven like from 2.00pm.

My conclusion is that for a Test match at this time of year (football would obviously different) for sun avoidance and comfort 1. The WACA members is the best area (that comes as no surprise) 2. The football members area (which seemed to be all corporate guests and mainly of Channel 7 at the Langer Stand end would be good if you got an invitation and then only when you are inside 3. The top level, level 5 would be excellent if they open it. 3. Pretty much anywhere else except deep in the stands square of the wicket you will be in the sun. Not a lot of fun when it is 38C. I'd be interested to hear what any locals or those who have been to a match here think. That aside, it is a great facility and very comfortable.

And seeing Kohli bat today has eased my sunburn.

It’s surprising how this has happpend. It was like the Indians were bowling grenades. Still hoping for an Australian win to make the Boxing Day Test more significant.

After watching today's play, I'm tipping a draw. It's not going to get over 30 degrees and with that grass on there I can't see the pitch breaking up at all.

From looking a good chance yesterday the draw is looking much less likely. I think it is hard to say how much the Aussies need. 200? 250? or 350 if Kohli gives another masterclass. The Indians have bowled really well and the demons are reappearing in the wicket.

Ultimately I think 250 is the aim for them. 200 they'd still be able to defend, but the Aussies would have to bowl like the Indian attack - whom have been absolutely superb!
