Dress standard in Business

Hi all

Sorry for the incorrect heading above it should read Dress standard in J. Can a mod please fix?


I have just rebooked my return leg from Japan in J on Qantas. I have not flown J before. I know there are dress standards for the business lounge but is there a standard for when you are on the plane in J?

There probably is a dress code for Qantas J lounges.

In terms of my experience, when flying J domestically, I have had people sitting next to me wearing singlets and shorts, along with typical 'tradie' clothes. So if there is a rule, it certainly isn't enforced.

There’s no standard really other than what gets you in to the lounges. Or not. You will get PJ’s I think, so that will help with comfort when sleeping.

Normally I'll walk on to the plane wearing minimum a collar and clean shoes. Shortly after takeoff (sometimes before pushback) get up and put on sleepwear, either my own or theirs. Business class is designed to be comfortable. Hope you have an awesome flight

There are no dress standards for QF international lounges (unlike select QF domestic lounges). As long as your clothing doesn't cause offense (in terms of slogans/symbols etc), you're fine to wear whatever is comfortable.

There is equally no dress code for international business class (same exclusion for articles of clothing that may have offensive slogans etc).

Just wear whatever is comfortable. No one even bats an eyelid. And take your own PJs if on a day flight.

I wear the same clothes whether in Y, J, or F. Jeans and a (clean) t-shirt. I couldn't give a stuff what any of the other pax are wearing, nor they of me.

(side note, when flying in premium cabins it is behaviour, not dress, that causes offence)

Wearing a hat indoors!? Shocking!

That got me wondering about what hat etiquette used to be.

I think the etiquette used to be hats off for indoors, but hats on for public transport (trains and cabs). From photos in the 1950s/60s it seems aircraft got classified as the former.

I am guilty of this on a flight to HKG last week . The crew came up and touched them as they'd never seen the A380 F ones.
As I'm travelling for work typically I wear a suit and then change as soon as I'm onboard into F PJs mostly to avoid a stained white shirt. If for leisure wear whatever you personally feel appropriate and confident in.

Usually just a shirt, shorts and joggers. Have never been stopped at Sydney J or F lounge.

Business class is all about comfortable, so make yourself as comfortable as possible on the journal.

One thing I have observed over the years is that people dress standard goes down the more frequent they fly.

It helps that it's winter but it was a pleasure to be at the boarding gate last week in SIN for the EK flight SIN-BNE. It looks like most people went to some trouble to wear something nice (and yes comfortable). Nothing outrageous.
