Long time lurker, first time poster...

I'm going through Sydney on my way to Dubai (booked on QF8413, which is really EK413), and am SG so have access to both the QF J and EK lounges. Which would you recommend?

EK lounge has better food and real champagne. If you have time, try both!

In that case I'd go EK.

Enjoy the trip - and welcome to AFF!

I concur with the recommendations ... Oak panelled and golden glitzy they may be; EK lounges have F&B of a general high standard.

Also EK have massage chairs! :)

Which the QF J lounge does not.

(OK so a real massage at the F lounge is better )

I'm going to echo all of the above - definitely the EK lounge over QF J.

SYD QFi J lounge while having windows, and letting light in, does not give you any views to the outside. Views are blocked by the airconditioning ducts. SYD QFi F lounge has a platform that you can go to have views of the outside, above the ducts.
While I have not been into the SYD QF F lounge, (will sometime soon), if you have no access to any other lounges, the SYD QFi J lounge is the only one to get "some" peace and quiet, but if you get other/have other options, use the other options.
For me, views to the outside are a large plus.

No need to go outside for QF F lounge, it has uninterrupted views of the northeast part of the airfield (freight terminal, 16R, T3/T2). Don't know what the platform is to which you refer, unless I've totally missed it in all my visits as far as I know there's no ability to go outside while in the Flounge.

In response to the OP's query, I agree with suggestions for the EK lounge - as noted, the F&B is great and with only an hour you shouldn't become too fatigued from the glitz :p

+1 for the EK lounge. It's certainly got the bling factor which the QF J Lounge is missing, plus it's a much better selection of food.
If nothing else since you're flying on EK, the EK lounge is right where you need to be, where as the QF J Lounge is right on the other side of the terminal.

I would also like to know about this QF F platform!

Probably, the public access plane spotters platform that can be seen from within the warmth and comfort of the F Lounge. Although, I suspect you knew that already ;).

Where is that? Underneath the FLounge?

From memory (and I could be wrong since I am back to SG and haven't been there in a while), you can see it from the spa end of the lounge and it's at about the same level as the F Lounge.

Never seen the platform - though haven't specifically looked to be honest. Aside from going for a spa session, I tend to stay at the other, much quieter side of the lounge. There seemed to be a fair bit of scaffolding and work happening in the adjoining part of the terminal last time I was there (maybe 8 weeks ago). Will greatly diminish the view (for the plane-spotters at least) down at that library end if it is a terminal expansion.

It's like a little enclosed coughpit within the F lounge.
No access from the J lounge.
Will check it out Jul or Oct on my next trip to Chc.
It's fully enclosed and raised up above the air conditioning ducts.
