Vinomofo Wine Deals

I had been trying not to buy more wine - I don't know why I bother. The 2 Fox Gordon offerings this month were too good to let pass.

So here's my 500th post. Although I would usually post this to the Nice Wines thread, it seems more appropriate to post this one here. The thread that got me hooked into fine wine, has led to new friendships, and that has been Swinging from the clouds with the latest Fox Gordon wine offerings.

I didn't really like it! And I can't believe I am saying that given all the high praise received by the Fox Gordon Hannah's Swing Shiraz 2014.

I posted the following tasting note:

2014 Fox Gordon Shiraz Hannah's Swing, Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley - CellarTracker

http://www.vivino.com/users/8818052/activities/100638398

"A very drinkable 92+/100 (3.7/5.0) from me. This is Fox Gordon's pinnacle Shiraz. The fruit is hand picked from two leading growers in Bethany and Greenock in the Barossa Valley and matured in French oak for 18 months.

It has a vibrant and translucent colour hinting at its light-to-medium body and rich fruit flavours. The nose is shy in comparison to the silky, rich palate of plums, blackberries, mulberries, liquorice, spice and sweet cedar oak. At $60 cellar door, it's too much. But at $21 as a hidden label from VinoMofo it's about right. Lovely potential.
"

The sweet cedar oak knocked it out of balance for me, especially when I was not having the wine with food. To be fair, with food it was as smooth as a baby's bottom, so to speak. At this very early stage it shows nice promise.

I only acquired 2 bottles in a swap. I said to my Fo broker I would call him back if I wanted a full 6 pack. I won't be calling him. But I am glad I have another to try in 3 years time, if GW I'm still knocking around then.

Happy Wednesday all.

Wozza - was avoiding posting my thoughts on this, as was underwhelmed when consuming given the hype. I purchased a sixer and then ordered another sixer based on all the praise, which I have since cancelled. Found it a little sweet myself, as you rightly indicated

A pleasant wine - to me a album track from one of Radiohead's lesser albums - worthy but not on any of my mix tapes. Maybe it will be a grower

Wozza, are you any chance a super-taster? I know taste is a very personal and subjective thing, but from my own experiences I found the use of oak to be quite restrained and the taste of cedar quite subtle. Maybe my own tastes are marred, or at least framed, by the over-oaked monsters from the late 90's. I do agree about the sweetness though, I put that down to the vibrancy of the fruit.

I took a swing too, based on the group enthusiasm… no big deal if my socks remain in place , the quaffer/ give away rack just grows.

I do need to be more discerning though, and (try to ) only buy really high quality offerings in an effort to minimise the quaffer spin off factor.

I have no intention of drinking my Swing anytime soon, I still have some 2010 left!
The 6 I have were purchased with the intention of putting away for a few years, there is plenty in my collection to drink in the mean time.

Yep - It's surprisingly quite decent IMHO.

It will certainly reward aging as it's quite young, but drinks well enough at this stage. Not bad for $15.

Anyone who picked some up have any tasting notes? i'm also quite keen to know what alcohol content of the final product.

Helped out picking on the day and the fruit was looking a little past it optimal picking time, a little overripe, plus not having experienced pickers there was no bunch dropping, am very interested in how it turned out!

Great day though, raised a hell of a lot of money, well done to VM and all the wineries who donated time and equipment!

2 Margaret River Cab Sauv's up as Black Market Deals at the moment. One 2013 ($11.90 bottle), one 2014 ($9.90 bottle). Just picking up an everyday drinker. Any tips on these ones?

Passes my mind that those with a big cellar might find them worth stashing away .. as much for the sense of occasion that it represented than (perhaps) the content.
What value a rack of the last twenty years of vim homeless grapes ?
Sadly I won't live that long but perhaps a worthy collection ?

Thanks for being honest Wozza, a good reminder that personal tastes differ. This has motivated me to crack open a bottle on Saturday to sample! Perhaps a case of hiding these bottles out of sight for a while to let them mature.

Afternoon all. Just going through the latest VM deals (a lot of WA wines hitting our screens I see). Anyway, am interested if anyone knows the label behind this one?

If anything this makes me even more excited about receiving my delivery! I'm a big fan of something a little sweeter.

Horses for courses!

I'm guessing this is the Anarchist Mt Benson Shiraz, scored 95/Gold at Melbourne and Limestone Coast shows, around $20, 14.0%.

Fist offered May 2015 I think, originally at $8.25

Thanks Red. Looks on the money.

I'm still debating.
Pre or post-electronic Radiohead?

I was just as surprised a you, DB! As I know you and I often have very similar experiences from wine tasting.

You could be absolutely right. It may have been the fruit rather than the oak. Or it could just be we sampled the wine under completely different conditions, affecting what each of us were picking up from the wine. I only tried the wine over lunch and then in the evening with my dinner, and it did get better for me with time.

I put the sweetness down to the oak because it tasted a lot like a wine recently released from French oak (18 months is a fairly long time for such a fairly light bodied wine, in my opinion. Even with the lovely Barossa fruit intensity the wine offers). I was trying to find the technical winery notes on the vintage to see the balance between new and used French oak and when the fruit was picked. I couldn't find it, unfortunately.

I agree with you, however. The super smooth tannins are sublime on this wine, especially with food. And I loved the lower ABV for this Barossa wine. Such a change from the usual Reds coming out of the Barossa. I reckon it has all the ingredients to develop into a lovely wine in 2-4 years time, so those that are tucking them away should have a great wine on their hands.

I'm looking forward to catching up next month a swapping notes on the Cabernets that are being lined up. My wines have arrived from the auction, so I am getting all excited! See you then ...
