Platinum [benefits]

Thanks all. I did buy an eco ticket but paid more for it to be upgradable I didn't change my pin in the last six months and yes when I called they said my request was waitlisted. The fellow on the phone said he tried to upgrade it 4 times but wasn't able. I don't know what that means.

I fly Emirates to London frequently and love the A380 business. I've always paid the business fare and haven't relied on an upgrade. Having said that many of my male colleagues I travel with get upgraded from business to first class by Emirates but I never have been. Interesting.

My actual flight from Sydney to Dallas yesterday went like this. In Perth QC told me that they had blocked out seat 32J next to me do that I would at least have 2 seats. When I got to Sydney I found someone had been placed in that seat but I found that out on boarding so too late. Qantas said every seat in first and business was full and were commercial seats not upgrades.

Anyway half way through the flight the customer service manager on the plane asked me if I would like to lie down for a few hours in the staff bay to get some sleep. Wonderful. After 4 hours sleep (the first in 2 days) I felt human again. Nice move Qantas. Doesn't make up for no upgrade but very appreciative of the gesture. Staff were lovely.

Gee that is very considerate of the CSM!

Dare I say an experience most of us will never have one way or the other. I know you'd rather be in J and you didn't care about being in the crew rest area but that would have been very interesting I think!

That's very interesting. As far as I know (can't speak specifically for Qantas), crew rest is very much off limits to passengers for safety and security reasons

I have to say the F lounge (Even though I can't access it) is one of the best benefits. About a week ago (20th June) I was on QF29 and it was delayed by about 3 hours.

The First Host (I think thats what they had on their name tags) at the entrance when I went up (Because I didn't want to accept another food voucher) was the same person at the F check in and recognised me and remembered that I was on QF29, she then went on to get me some fruit, biscuits and soft drink and put it in a bag for me. Another First Host at the F lounge desk also had a nice discussion with me and thought it was great that I didn't really mind that we were delayed and also was interested about Boarding (Because I am a boarder).

Also having a nice message on my BP (Congratulations on Reaching Platinum) was a very nice touch.

This is where QF have earnt themselves a loyal follower, at least until WP turns into SG :p

Anyone know what the deal is if I achieve platinum mid itinerary? Can I access lounges even if the points haven't credited to my account yet? Or is it bad luck?

Would a printout of my credits be sufficient?

You'd need the QF (or partner) system to update your status to show Platinum (and then flow through) so yes the flights/SC's would have to credit. One presumes if you attain WP from a flight, then have a few days till the next flight this would transpire, your BP (or app) would show the new status.

Could get tricker if on a partner airline like AA where the databases may not always sync up so quickly, but I'd imagine you definitely need the QFF system to credit the flights then update your status IMHO.

Not that simple. I will fly BKK>HKG (which will get me over the line), then have a few hours stopover, then on to PVG. Would be nice to get to use the new cathay HK first lounge as my first WP experience. SG lounge might have to do though.

yeah, sorry but can't see how that's going to work. (and I don't really include the QF HK lounge).

I suppose you could always ASK and say you know you have made emerald, but honestly I'm pretty sure they'd politely direct you to the J lounge.

Sill someone else may have some sage advice :)

You'll be on partner metal flights (I presume CX/KA?) and there's no way the first leg would credit to QFF. Further, you'd already have your onward BP printed showing OWS (Sapphire) on it at check-in. Third, given it is a partner lounge, a lounge angel is in no way going to be interested in seeing your flight bookings and credits and SC earn to prove you've made it. a) they don't have time and b) they wouldn't have access to QF's systems to verify even if they did.

I'd rate an only slightly better chance at a QF lounge

Might just take a print out, bat my eyelids and hope the angel likes me!

Most missed benefits since downgrade:

1. F Lounges. Especially in SYD/MEL but also DXB/HKG/NRT/KUL/LHR.
2. Arrivals lounge access domestically and in HKG/LHR.
3. Extra award availability.
4. WP Shadow.
5. Better status matches.

So if I arrive to per on domestic QF but flew out on nz to Akl later could I still access per lounge until nz checking open? Or go pick bags up, store them then go back to QF lounge?

Yes a QF platinum can go into the domestic lounge after their flight

Was this on your next boarding pass after making platinum? I'm doing MLB, Syd, LAX, JFK next week, and the LAX-->JFK segment will get me to platinum. Wondering if it'll be reflected on my boarding pass so I can use F lounge, or whether I have to wait till next time :p.

Reality check this week on my KTA-PER flight. In her welcome message to One World and FFer's, she made specific mention to the 55 Platinum members on board. Damn FIFO's I thought lol......but incredible that a third of the plane were platinum......no wonder I never get any op-ups!!!

Kind of ironic, but it was the cancellation last year of the direct BNE/MEL/SYD - KTA flights that propelled a lot of eastern states FIFOs from gold to platinum, by virtue of having to connect at PER.

(Pedantic hat on) - MLB is the Melbourne in Florida. Now you'll be close if in JFK, but I presume you meant MEL :)
(Pedantic hat off)
