Yes but the issue is the times when the daughter can’t sit with them - essentially when seat belt is on.
Yes I realise that too.

Personally I think the rules are cruel and sometimes totally unfair. I just paid $540 one-way for daughter to sit on my lap SYD-BKK in business class. Would have had to pay more for daughter to sit with wife in First. Makes no sense but that's the rules.

Yes but a 3yr old isn’t allowed to be a “lap child” and is not an “infant” using QF parlance and therefore needs their own seat- confirmed with Qantas 131313

Is there cabin crew discretion once on the aircraft for very young passengers who while over the infant age are actually as small as an infant?

And no booking would have been possible for that scenario unless 1 adult in Y.

Yes...but it seems clear (to me at least) that the OP was not aware of that/thought it could be skirted/whatever. 2 seats in J...Mum Dad and child. Empty seat in Y just to get child onboard.
No..its not allowed and won't work...but to suggest the OP intended to leave a 3 year old in Y by themselves is a bit of a stretch!

I agree but would suggest OP didn’t realise that when asking the question.

I think we are in sync here :)

I'm not sure how you made this inference. My reading of the post is he understands the regulations governing children on flights yet was trying to see if his friends on AFF could find some way to help him cut corners and save points.

It’s quite simple. It’s what the OP stated. I see not a great deal of understanding of the laws regarding children on laps. Heck, I travel heaps but don’t know the child age do’s and dont’s. I’m still learning.

If you have young kids like the OP (and I) does, I'd be very surprised he didn't know. It becomes clear as day when you try and book tickets for them, if not before.

And I still can't see where he states he isn't aware of the rules.

My reading was the OP knew the 3 year old needed a seat - that’s why s/he was prepared to get 3 frequent flyer seats and not 2.

In any case if I sounded harsh I apologise.

I am sure the intent was to save points and not leave the child in Y. However there's another issue quite apart from the fact that 3 is far too old (and big!) to be a lap child ... that of catering etc. If the girl is "sitting with" her parents, but there are only 2 J class seats.. what.. "oh just get her a kids meal from Y" or something?

I agree the best solution here is for all 3 to have seats in the same cabin, most probably PE (3 middle seats ideal - adult on each aisle and the little one in the middle).

Even in J, specially the newer suites, it's ot a great setiup for 3 specially if one of them is a youngster in their own suite.

my 2 cents.

Nothing wrong trying to cut corners. A few on AFF have made that an artform and some idolise them for gaming the system.

It's a shame that a 2 year old pays the same airfare or points as an adult. Sure they occupy a seat but do not use anywhere the same amount of food and beverage as an adult.

There used to be a discount for 2-12 year olds. When was that removed?

Absolutely! And it's something I endorse wholeheartedly but generally not at the expense of an innocent 3 year old.

Perhaps I'm not as mercenary as others but the idea of sitting back, clinking champagne flutes while the 3-year old fruit of my loins is further back, irrespective of for how long, is not a corner I'd cut. And certainly not one I'd be asking strangers for tips on how to pull off.

Seriously, the cost of the food/beverages is nothing compared to the general cost of fuel/aircraft/staff.
