I have some QFF points to spend on a holiday with my wife and a 3 years old girl. We want to book either premium economy or business class seats. However, for a 3 years old kid, she really don't need a full flat business seat. Just wondering, can I book 2 business tickets for my wife and me, and one economy seat for my daughter in one transaction. After we are on board, we just let our daughter sit with us on the two business seats.

I don't think it's possible to have a mixed award booking on the same ticket. Who is going to supervise the 3 year old?

If I recall it was mentioned that awards for children are discounted but not sure how much discount.

Either suck it up and get her a J ticket or save the points and go PE. She would not be allowed to sit in the same business seat as she is not an infant.

Sorry but really is a silly idea.

It won't be allowed. Unaccompanied minors are over the age of 5 for domestic and 6 for international travel on QF. This would mean your three year old is not eligible wouldn't be allowed to fly if unaccompanied.

The three year old also won't be allowed to sit with you are there aren't seat belt provisions for two passengers at seats.

you could book one business class and two premium economy, with an adult and child in premium economy. One way one of the adults could fly business and on the return, the other. you just swap seats on boarding the aircraft, informing the crew that the two adults have swapped.

I'm with Ansett, seriously.

And while I don't want to be harsh, c'mon a 3yr old on her lonesome in Y why the 2 parents are in J - gee whiz o_Oo_O.

Agree it’s not on at all, but he clearly says the idea is to have the kid in their 2 J seats after boarding, not leave the kid in Y.
Maybe they can get one F suite and all fit in it

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yep, he certainly does, my bad for not reading that completely. Still a 3yr old on her lonesome for take-off and landing, as you've said - not on.

This is not only a stupid idea, but unsafe and very wrong

Unsafe because what’s to stop the 3 year old removing her seatbelt during takeoff or landing and come looking for you

What if the seatbelt sign comes on during the flight. What then?

Wrong - Do you really expect someone to look after your daughter during the seatbelt times.

The airline would not allow this either.

If you really want to do 2 J and 1 Y, then 1 adult will need to be in Y

To answer your question:
You cannot book 2J and 1 Y in one frequent flyer booking. It has to be 2J on one booking and 1 Y in another booking - even if you ring up to make the booking.

You also can’t actually make a online or call centre booking for a 3 year old as the only person in the booking

A 3 year old should not travel alone in an airplane

As to the age when this is possible. It depends on the child but the airline has set a lower limit of 5yrs

...but unsafe

This is the crux of the issue. Seatbelt. Oxygen masks. Brace position. Life jacket. A three year old won't know how to operate/perform any of these, and crew will not be there to assist. If there's an evacuation, everyone should proceed to the closest exit, not try to return inside the aircraft against the flow of passengers to try and find their child.

Travel should be a positive experience for children. I would want to be side by side with my kids as they experience air travel not only to parent, but it gives me great joy to see my child experience such things. Why would I want to miss that.

There is a time to allow children to a little independent - when they are a bit older. Not at 3.

In fairness to the OP, I don't think it was ever his intention to have the child sitting alone. It seems his intention was rather that the three of them sat together in the two business seats. Perhaps booking one adult and one child in J, and the other adult in Y, they could achieve their desire, with one of the adults being alone in Y for takeoff and landing. That would actually make for an interesting situation during the flight for the parents: have peace and quiet back in Y, or have the comfort of the J seat but with child-supervision duties :)

In any case, in such a situation, I would just get all three seats in PE. I like to travel with all my family members, not separated in different parts of the plane.

Unless one passenger is an infant, with an appropriate infant restraint, 2 passengers can’t occupy the one seat as there aren’t suitable seat belt provisions.

Also there’d be a problem as the adult with the economy seat hasn’t paid the business class fare, so they wouldn’t be allowed to come up. The two adults could swap seats for the sector though.

Why not book mum and child in J and yourself in Y?

Considering we have to take original seats for landing and take off and 3 is too old to to be a lap child, if your plan was to put her in Y, I hope someone calls DOCS.

I took it that they were trying to save some points as a 3 year old doesn't need a fully flat bed and can sit with the parents.

Classic!

But seriously this has to be one of the most unrealistic postings I've read on this forum. As a parent, I'd be surprised at myself for even considering such a hair brain idea, much less giving it voice.

I know that most of us in this inglorious caper of ours places a highly value on our points holdings but I'm confident all of us place a higher value in the safety of our families.

Classic!.
How is a cabin with 200+ strangers while youre safely secured away in champagne class any different from Penrith Leagues and you left your kid somewhere else while youre playing the pokies. Its not. Its still selfish neglect.

Totally agree.

I was actually agreeing with you 100 per cent. I thought your comment was gold because never in a thousand years did I think I'd see DOCS mentioned on this forum.
